Question No PR card yet, how to visit/work short-term?

Hi all,

A convoluted request, but any help appreciated.

I gained my PR in April 2010 and as much I might want to up sticks in the ideal world, the financial downturn has made it a real-world concern so to date I am still in the UK.

Having said that, I've been asked if I would like to fly out and work in Montreal for a few weeks at a former employer who needs expert cover. In principle it would be great to see some old friends and maybe enjoy a working holiday.

The practicalities are this though:

When I landed in 2010, I was given a form to fax back for when I had a permanent address so that I could receive my PR card. I didn't realise the small-print at the time and it turns out that there was a 6 month time-frame for this to be done. Shortly after this 6 months, I faxed it in anyway and I also emailed CHC in London explaining the situation - in both cases I had no reply so I'd left it until I decided to move.

1. What is the process open to me now?
2. Friends in Toronto are still happy to offer me their address (and a room) for PR, is there any issue given that for the time being I'm only wanting to stay in Montreal for a short time?

Any advice is always gratefully appreciated

It's a 3 step process:

Apply for a permit to travel (for people who do not have a PR card): http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...ons/travel.asp

Go to Service Canada and obtain a SI number and card, using your COPR as proof of PR: http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/a...applying.shtml

Apply for PR card using your friends address for delivery: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/informa...card/index.asp

Lastly, don't forget you must live in Canada for 2 years out of 5 to retain PR.
