University Graduation Ceremony
My wife is flying to Hungary next month to attend the graduation ceremony for a member of her Hungarian family. Brilliant but twice my wife has had to change her flight plans due to changes to the date of ceremony. It's got me wondering are all universities in Hungary like this?

I've been to 2 such ceremonies and the dates were set some time in advance and did not change!

Wow, that is dedication to travel all that way for a graduation do. I can't remember if even my parents came to mine, there were certainly no other family members there.

Is that "ballagás"?
That's an important event in Hungary, you get to wear some kind of formal clothing (almost like a uniform) and then there's a picture to be made of the whole class.
I remember seeing these pictures in Keszthely in shop windows even ...
PS:
Ballagás is at least the name for schools - with universities I'm not so sure ...

Ballagás (saying goodbye to the teachers, school, etc) is in the school and uni, and when they actually get the certificate in their hand it is Diplomaoszto Ünnepség (when they are in the assembly hall and get their certificate). Ballagás is a big occasion in the schools but not uni. Diplomaoszto Ünnepség is the big occasion in the uni, by invitation.

Perhaps UK is the unusual country that does not bother much with stuff like that. I've noticed in American films they often talk about "Graduating from High School". At uni. you only graduate if and when you pass all or enough of the course. I wonder if there are middle aged Americans who are still at high school because they keep failing the exams?

Sorry for the OT!
Thanks, Szeged, for the info - I remember graduating from uni as a singular event - it was just my two profs (pure maths and applied maths ...) and me being interviewed for an hour ...
And then they asked what the physics prof thought of my interview - the paper said I was ok - bingo, I got my diploma!
But obviously times have changed - that was almost 50 years ago ...

Re: University Graduation Ceremony
High School Graduation is a huge event throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Graduation from University less so.
