The Only Nation with some sense in Europe
Contrary to the opinion of most of the members of this forum, The Leadership of Hungary knows the effects of illegal immigration and the devastation that it brings.
Hungary to seek public's views on immigration

First of all, I'm definitely not getting involved in a public political debate.
But, although I agree to a certain extent with what OV was saying, I have also wondered for some time what the long term implications of starting such a ball rolling will be. "Significantly sized minorities" could also mean British, German, Dutch expats in the future.

I have so much to say on immigration issues on both sides but have no intention to say anything on this forum because I just don't know who is reading my stuff!
Anyway, bottom line to any immigrant to Hungary is they should show respect to Hungary's rules/laws, culture, traditions and to learn the language.
Finally, one last word ...... why are these immigrants fleeing their own country? Is it because the West has been meddling in their affairs and not helped put in an infrastructure to ensure it's citizens feel safe in their own country? Okay, fair enough if a government/militant group/terrorists have been committing atrocious human rights incidents we should not stand back but ..... we shouldn't jump ship as soon as it's over and leave them with a puppet string government with poorly trained army to take over. If that is the case those meddling countries should be forced to take in these immigrants. Full stop.

Don't have a single political bone in my body.
So this is (probably) my only contribution to this thread.

I think the answer to significantly sized minorities is in V.O's remarks thus.
We welcome multi nationalism and Hungary has always welcomed those who wish to contribute to our society. We do not welcome multiculturalism where people do not wish to integrate into our society etc etc.

Why shouldn't we be expected to adapt if we want to live in Hungary? I would expect Hungarians who may move to the UK to learn English if they want to stay also. If a person desires to live anywhere they should be expected to fit in and adapt to their new host nations culture. If the new residents cannot or refuse to adapt they shouldn't expect to be greeted with open arms. If a new migrant cannot financially sustain themselves they should be deported also. They shouldn't expect to get a free ride at the expense of others.

Re: The Only Nation with some sense in Europe
Our Hungarian friends left Hungary because they found they could no longer afford to live a good standard of life . They were concerned for the future of their children & also for general safety within their own society from what they say.
So they left for New Zealand with not one word of English and a Hungarian tech school plumbing qualification.
Today , then years on, they are all settled and well. They speak great English and are integrated with many friends . The children are flourishing.

First it is a fallacy that Brits or others should learn Hungarian. While a nice theory we do not need to as if retired we do not want a job or put any demands on the Hungarian state. Medical is an area where it could be said that Hungarian is useful but in practice I have found most doctors speak English. We net contribute to the economy although there are not many of us here now. The recent statement by HM government on fuel allowance showed only 180 ex pats getting it here. The point is that migrants who want to work etc in a given country should learn the language no question.
Europe has already shown that multiculturalism does not work.

That reminds me of one bloke I know (here in Mallorca) who bangs on endlessly about the arrogance of Spanish who refuse to learn or speak proper English. They are foreigners, after all.
And for what reason should UK taxpayers pay a benefit intended to help less fortunate British residents cope with high winter heating costs, to those who have all the wherewithal to move abroad? This is a great example of expensive, idealistic social programmes which mostly benefit those who don't need them. But I reckon most feel entitled to that gift, so they can buy a new iPad or something. And hypocritically, they're usually first in line to crirticise anyone who chronically sucks bennies off the state.
Many may or may not consider themselves a socialist, but this is precisely the kind of self-servitude that socialism has taught us to embrace. I'm entitled. Because I'm British.

Until the winter fuel allowance is means tested (against income as well as expected low temperatures) then I am entitled to it as one who has paid in to the system the same as anyone living in the UK.
