Default MoT price.

Any (standard) car owners had an MoT done? What was the cost?

I have a 4x4 and local garage cannot do MoT, it must go to the commercial test centre where the cost is 31,000fts.

Seems a bit pricey compared to the £30 in the UK, even given that it is only bi-annual here.

Sounds about right, 4x4s are a bit more than 'normal' cars because there is more to check - or so they say. The garage I use, as I recall, charged 40,000fts for a pre-check, fixed a couple of things and took the car to the MOT for me. (I have found that if a garage takes the car to the MOT then it is more likely to pass than if Joe Public takes a car).

Edit. I don't think the cost is a reflection on the amount of work done to do an MOT, but rather the cost plus revenue stream (think of it as a bit more tax!).

Is it right that the MOT equivalent in Hungary lasts for two years?

Yes

But you can't have a UK car MOT'ed here. vehicles can only be tested in the country of their registration.....which is a real shame!

I managed to get my old UK car registered in Hungary - which was when I heard that the MOT would last for 2 years - good to have confirmation as I often misunderstand things!

Final price was 30,050fts.
Test time = 10 mins
Paperwork wait =1 hr 20 mins.

Yes John, ever 2 years, but government do not send out reminders, so beware of the renewal date.

For any body that doesn't know. your MoT status is shown by the top of the two coloured stickers on your rear number plate, so an easy spot for any police following you!

Unlike for (Hungarian) driving licences where you do get an email reminder of their expiry.

You could use your old UK car tax disc holder to insert a piece of paper with your MOT expiry date to remind you.

They can't check much in 10 minutes, the UK test takes a lot longer than that. I have wondered if the Hungarian MoT is less thorough than the UK one. My car has a warped brake disc and makes a horrible noise when you drive it but they never commented on that at the last MoT, although they did tell me the brake pads were getting low!

It was minimal.
Brake and suspension checked.
headlight alignment was checked but not other lights.
Items like seatbelts were not checked neither were the wipers or washers, which I had topped up in readiness.

The vehicle is still quite new with low mileage, and was washed and cleaned including underneath, so was easy to inspect. Possibly an older neglected vehicle would receive more attention.

Odd you should mention the brake wear Fid, when I did the import test 2 years ago they told me mine were worn, when I removed them having purchased new ones I found the wear was less than 2mm, so I put them back in. and this time no comment.
