Hungarian Passport Options

My Hungarian wife has got herself in a pickle. Her Hungarian passport is due to expire in May 2018. She couldn't get an appointment with the Hungarian Embassy in London until July! That's a long wait and we're due to fly to Hungary in early August. She thinks she may be able to get an emergency passport. Is this possible? What are her other options? Flights and dog kennels already booked. I did tell her back in January she should start sorting out her passport but she thought it would be fine .... it's now March. Looking at the Hungarian Embassy website it doesn't look like she will get a new one before August!

Where are you going?
If you are traveling from UK to Hungary (or anywhere else in the EU) then you don't need a passport, an identity card is all that is needed.

In Germany expired passports are tolerated for some time - I just found this official site:
https://europa.eu/youreurope/citizen...y/index_en.htm

Be aware that a Hungarian travel document gives right of entry into Hungary only if it is still valid or has been expired for less than one year.
So she should be ok ...
Good luck!

She doesn't gave an I.D. card. Could she get one, despite the fact she lives in UK?

If she is Hungarian she can have an ID card (as far as I know). Ask at the embassy.

She would need to be resident in Hungary to get a ID card AFAIK. The airline is unlikely to board someone with an expired passport but worth asking.

Re: Hungarian Passport Options

The embassy in London does not issue documents such as address card, id card, etc. Was there last week and my HU GF (now wife) had to surrender her address card to be sent back to Hungary for name change. Likewise, she had to travel to Hungary to get OFFI translations done beforehand.

For the above appointment last week, she original got July 2018 as an appointment but then was lucky to get last week due to someone cancelling their appointment. So my immediate advice would be to KEEP CHECKING FOR AN APPOINTMENT ON THE LONDON EMBASSY WEBSITE. Someone might cancel also. When we got there last week so many peoples names were called out to enter the interview room whereby many of those people were not even in the embassy (i.e. too lazy to cancel their appointment); making the whole system "chance appointment".

FenTiger - Even if your wife got an embassy appointment tomorrow, she would still have to wait months for a new passport. Can she not book an earlier flight (before her passport expires) and renew her passport in one day from Budapest? Just a thought.

Szeged - flying to Budapest is an option I'm going to suggest to her. Haven't spoken to her properly yet about it because she was working last night. Thanks for the suggestion.

This incident is partly due to the fact my wife is quite laid back. She never worries about anything. As soon as her head hits the pillow she's dead to the world. I'm the very opposite and according to my smart watch I don't get enough deep sleep. Probably because I'm worrying for two people!

The worse case scenario is to change flights to October! She's going to Hungarian embassy on Monday to make enquiries face to face. Suffice to say if we are going to lose the costs of our non-refundable flights I'm flying out alone if I can. My wife has been to Hungary twice last one year. Me ... last time two years ago. Main reason is our senior GSD. Might do a bit of traveling around Hungary, I.e. explore the West and South.
