How much are your taxis per km?
 

Hi All,

I pay around 480 Ft per kilometer for a taxi in Szeged, but pay around 540 Ft in Kecskemét. Budapest has fixed rates. I just wandered what you pay in your town/village/city? Also, is there a website that has compared taxi prices in Hungary?

Nothing!

All the villages in this region have their own mini bus taxi and driver who'll take you to the shops/doctor/ hospital/etc and do your shopping for you if needed any day during the week between the hours of 6.30 am until 4 in the afternoon.

He's also available for emergency call outs at the weekend.

My wife told me that every town/village gets a certain amount of state money which they can use for these types of support, some use it to give people cheap "meals on wheels", others for transport as Sachina describes. Often children are transported free to the next school - many villages have no own school at all or just the first four years are taught.
So the type of support is different everywhere - here near Hévíz we have a well developed bus system (free for pensioners!), so the money is spent on other things ...

Have never used taxis in Hungary because we have a fleet of relatives and friends to drive us around. Suffice to say when they are here in UK I'm the lone driver!!!

Public transport - trains and buses - are free to pensioners travelling anywhere in Hungary, including visiting EU members.

I have a friend who comes over regularly from the UK who catches the train from Budapest to Miskolc. Where I have to show my Hungarian ID card to travel free of charge, she has to show her passport.

What age does one become a pensioner in Hungary? Or can it be anyone who is receiving a pension? i.e. suppose I retire early (before 60) would I be classed as a pensioner?

My understanding is that public transport (excluding supplements which everyone had to pay) is only free for over 65's. The pensioner's travel certificate for under-65s contains vouchers offering 16 single journeys at 50% and 2 single journeys at 10%. In practice, pensioners can get away with paying 10% every time on buses because the driver does not bother to check.

I think I'm correct in saying the State pensionable age in Hungary for both men and women is 62. Like the UK though the rules are altering and it could be slightly later If you're a resident your date of birth is on your ID or in your case on your UK passport. I have two cards, one for my residency and the other to say I'm an OAP which is the one I have to produce if I wish to travel free on public transport.

I'm not sure what the 10% on buses is about as it's something I've never come across. On certain trains usually the express if you wish to travel first class then you do pay a supplement which is paid to the collector during the journey, when he goes round checking the tickets.

The pensionable age in Hungary varies according to your age and how many years for contributions you have made. 40 years of contributions plus reaching a qualifying age gives you the right to be a pensioner. With out the 40 years there is a qualifying age that that kicks in. It is all about raising the pension age over time to take in to account the longer expected life span and the unaffordability of the state pension scheme. (Much like the rest of Europe inc. the UK).

The free travel starts at the age of 65. if you are a pensioner before that age you get the annual reduced travel allowance as defined above.

Once you are a pensioner you no longer have to pay TB (the Hungarian NI contributions) I found it an advantage to start my work related UK pension early so that I gained 'pensioner status' and so was exempt Hungarian TB. Note that if you have a UK private pension (SIPP) and you start 'draw down' this gives you pensioner status but under the UK rules you don't have to take any income unless you want to.

Of course Brexit could change all of this and UK citizens will be dependent upon the eventual agreement reached. Worst case - frozen UK state pensions and loss of the Hungarian pensioner rights and health care we currently enjoy.....Thank you Nigel and Boris!

But to get back to the OP the Taxi prices vary in each area but I have only managed to find web sites dealing with Budapest.

Paid €50 from Airport to Chain-bridge. Used underground and my host’s car in Budapest. The underground was neat and very convenient.

Otherwise airport to chain bridge would cost 2 bus tickets by public transport (and about 1 hour)

How much! Were you stuck in traffic for hours?
Have never paid more than €35 (usually about €30) from the airport either into Pest or Buda.

Wouldn’t be too convenient with all the luggage I had.
I think Public Transportation is best when you A) know the routes and destination(s), B) Don’t have excessive luggage.

Alright, I may have mixed it up with the 50 Euro fix fare from Charles de Gaulle to Central Paris(Opera Area). Yeah, you’re right. The fare in Budapest was something around €25. €50 was in Paris. Booked the taxi from the booth on the left once you exit.
