Flag
I noticed at the weekend a lot of houses in my village had small flags flying from their houses, no doubt for the 1848 Revolution Day. By coincidence, someone in Croatia has asked me to get them a small Hungary flag to mount on their boat. I spent hours going round different shops looking and sometimes asking for a flag but had no joy. I'm wondering if I have to find a specialist shop, the sort that sells school ties and caps (if schoolchildren in 21st century still wear such items). Any suggestions much appreciated, as I don't want to admit defeat when it is for someone else.

No, we don't seem to have any Halfords type places that I'm aware of, just the motor factor (Autóalkatrész) type shops where you can buy brake shoes, oil filters etc etc. I was in one of those the other day, buying a new timing belt and a set of brake pads. They had the same system as the banks where you take a numbered ticket and a display shows which assistant you have to go to.

Hi there,
My wife suggested underground souvenir shops in Budapest. She saw them there. Hope that helps.

Re: Flag
Alternatively buy large Italy flag turn it 90 degrees and cut it to size.

Thanks for the suggestions. I asked a Hungarian friend and he has given me some links for ordering online or alternatively he says I could try in a military store (whatever that may mean). It seems we do indeed have a "Munkaruha és Military Bolt" so I will try there. If that fails I will order online but the postage is 1700 Ft for the required 30 x 20 cm flag so it would probably be cheaper to buy one in a local shop. If the place is like the old army & navy surplus shops in UK (Wakefields was our local one in Coventry if I recall correctly) it might prove useful for hard wearing work gear. Or perhaps they sell slightly worn Kalashnikovs?
