can you get cream in Hungary
Hi everyone,
recently purchased a house north of Eger, with the intention of moving permanently in 2018.
As a keen cook, I am struggling to find cream in shops i.e. single or double. Tesco in Eger and other supermarkets all seem to have the squirty variant, but not fresh cream in cartons.
Does anyone know if it is available, and if so, where might I buy it?

Yes, look for tejszín or tejszínhab (whipping cream). This is one sold in Lidl:

Yes, that one is whipping cream at 30% butter fat. I have never seen double cream (which is 50% butter fat) here.
As with milk and sour cream always check the butter fat %age

Yes, I think single cream is normally called főzőtejszín (cooking cream) and is around 10 % fat.

I use tejfol instead of cream for most of my cooking. The only time I use cream is when I make trifles or need it as a filling for a cake.

Hungarians often use sour cream aka tejföl, Sachina is right there.
One problem with Hungarian milk products is:
They usually contain much less fat than in other countries, Austria e g.
So my (Hungarian) wife always tells me to buy as much cream and sour cream (creme fraiche in French) as possible in Germany or Austria at 30% fat - of course that also tastes much better than "sour cream" with only 15% fat ...

In this part of the country you can buy 20% Tejfol and in our local Spar the one I usually buy is their own brand which is 25%!

Of course, the high fat stuff is more fattening though! I tend to buy the 12% tejfol but I mostly only use it for things like white sauces, in mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. You can make an instant cold sauce for any meal that might otherwise be too dry with a couple of teaspoons of paprika, a pinch of salt and a large dollop of tejfol.
