Any Happy Campers on the forum?

Any Happy Campers on the forum?
I have been here for a couple of years now and have the house reasonable sorted, so it is time to see a little more of the country.
I have spent the last 40 odd years saying I would never ever get a caravan or motorhome, but here I am seriously considering it!
My excuse being that Hungarian roads are a lot less crowded so I will not be a mobile obstruction too often.
Any one want to offer an opinion before I invest?

Caravans (like trailers) have a vehicle identity - which means that they need separate insurance, an MOT and are subject to weight tax, so for occasional use it can get expensive.
Weight tax is calculated on all up weight which for me meant that my 2 ton when fully loaded tipping trailer cost more in road tax (by lots) than my long wheel base Land Rover which is taxed on hp. !!
As an alternative or to test your enthusiasm - rent one
A quick search on google found
Lakókocsi bérbeadás. Guruló szállások minden kategóriában! Lakókocsi kölcsönzés témakörben bérelhető termékek, kölcsönözhető szolgáltatások listája. 1. oldal

lakókocsi bérlés as the search term. There are others including camper vans.

So I would assume a motorhome might be a better option, paying tax etc on engine rather than weight. obviously I need to do more research on the whole subject.

I think you also need to think about what size caravan you are looking for? Also same with motorhome if you opt for this. How long will you stay in one site before you move on? How much work will you have to put in each time you pitch up for the day/night, etc. that's for each option. Both caravans and motorhomes can have extensions, are you intending to get this as well? Additional work to attach to caravan/motorhome so for short stays .... alot of work. Also will your caravan/motorhome include a toilet/shower or just toilet and wash basin. What season are you planning to use caravan/motorhome? Will you need heating or even AC .... can be unbearably hot in caravans/motorhomes unless you can shield it from the sun.
I think Peter_in_Hungary's suggestion to rent is a good option ..... better than buying a caravan or motorhome and then realising you've bought a white elephant you can't get rid of at the right price.
Also when not using caravan/motorhome are you able to leave it in a secure location?

Hope I have not put you off ... I think it's a great idea to do a bit of travelling but you do bike around alot don't you. I think most important thing is how often will you use it and will the expense be worth it. What about a trailer tent? Will that be a better option for touring, sleeping in, towing and storing?

If and when I ever get my van on the road I want to bung in a mattress, caravan cooker and portable toilet and go touring the Adriatic coast. I might also take my little 200cc Suzuki dirtbike so I can explore the wilder areas.
