The maximum you can exchange is 5000 rupees whether in £ or $.

I suppose cash is still king when it comes to money in Goa.I have 3 friends who will be arriving very soon for 3 months or so and they are looking for advise. Pre-paid Mastercard or cash ? Advise welcome.

IM's longest thread - worth scanning through it.

But to summarise - it doesn't matter what you have got: cards, cash, TCs, gold Sequins - what matters is what people in India haven't got - cash!

Advice? - if they've got Indian bank accounts or good friends with such then OK. If they can afford to stay, and eat in places that accept foreign credit/debit cards then also OK at a price. Otherwise, well I have to suggest they forget it.
Watch this space (well the above linked thread) but unless things change a lot and soon they would be spending their trip looking for ATMs (I saw one today that had money, first I've seen in a month).

The travel industry seem to be trying to downplay this, but they should really be telling people not to come.

Thanks for the advice i have 3 people travelling out very soon. I automatically assumed there would not be a problem if they had Dollars, Pounds etc to change into Rupees.I did not realise that its actually cash that is the problem, not enough of it around. Will warn them.My two sisters are already in Goa so i will contact them to find out whats happening at ground level.

It is a cash economy. Take local currency. In small denominations. Large denomination bills have just been withdrawn from circulation as part of the fight against tax evasion and corruption.

Bringing cash here is a waste of time, there's hardly anywhere to exchange it and the places that are changing foreign currency are ripping you off.The only way you can get by is paying by debit/credit card.

That is old news!!
It is illegal to take rupees into or out of India.
Regarding the recent scrapping of notes it is also a problem for those who left the country days before it happened and left a stock of notes in their cupboards!!

You can take 25000 rupees in and out with you but I know a few people who have a lot more than that in old notes who aren't coming here until January.Basically worthless bits of paper now.
