I know there are insurance companies in the UK that specialise in allowing a UK car to spend all year overseas.

Furthermore, what do you do with your UK driving license if you move abroad - should you register a new address ?

So I can get European insurance in the UK? My car is taxed, mot'd and insured until end of February. If I can find a UK insurance company that will give me full European insurance then surely it can stay here as long as I do. I have done a search on google but don't seem to come up with much. The only reason I want keep it here is because I don't have time to return and sell it at the moment. Do you know which ones do it?

Did you not read the other posts ?

Residence laws overrule anything that an insurance company will sell you.

Yes, I did read them and I was ready to return the car but then Zel said
"There are 'specialist' insurers but make sure you read the small print very very carefully to see if the policy suits you and your status" and I wanted to look into it. So, there is insurance available but it's not valid? I give up!

When he says small print it will say while you are on tour usually up to 3 months in any year and your main residence is the UK.
Every EU country has a stipulation that depending on the time you stay there, either 3 or in some 6 months then you are deemed resident, thereby technically making the UK insurance invalid.
It is a nightmare situation, and the only way out is to buy a car registered in the country you live in.

Sadly i cannot remember, but we did look into it as an option to bring over our Astra for a while.

In the end it was easier to sell the car in the UK and buy a little C1 here in Belgium - what a funky little car !

Insurance is a pain in the butt though, that piddly little 995cc car at 1000 Euro a year

I only know about the other way around: If you stay in the UK for more than 1 year, you need to register the car in the UK. German insurance contracts also last only 1 year (though TÜV is 2 years). Insurance is just paperwork however. Doesnt need the car over for this. From the country of origin (Germany), you need to unregister after more than 3 month. But should you return within 3 month the period starts anew.
Wondering if that's the same way vica versa? www.dvla.gov.uk might help ?

But, not wishing to go around in circles, if it isn't completely legal in the UK then the insurance would be invalid
