Die Bahn
Have a look at the website for Deutsche Bahn. The English version is pretty good. Then compare it to the product we get from the asinine Branson in Britain.
Go beyond the website and compare the experience on the two different systems.

Interesting theory, pity the german website doesnt function correctly on my ipad pro, guess theres a reason why the virgin ones simpler.
However nobodys got time to compare dumb websites, and actually very few people would book via the virgin site, trainline etc are far more useful as they arent com pany centric, and tickety split if you really want low costs.
This evening - get a life...

Re: Die Bahn
Forget cyberspace. Compare the trains. Time for us to get rid of Branson. German Railways are publicly owned. Ours should be too !

Not all is so great with DB either. You will find out once you need to use them frequently. They announce 5 mins delay and 40 mins you still wait. May be trains in UK are worse?

Re: Die Bahn
The crunch for me is the cost of a ticket when you turn up and buy it. Even the best planners in our midst have family emergencies.
Public ownership of the railway network is the way.

Possibly but only after Brexit. EU competition law prevents the wholesale renationalisation of railways.

Re: Die Bahn
No, that is not correct. EU competition law strengthens competition between owners of railways no matter if they are private companies or states. The only thing that does not work under EU rule is that you have a state monopolies that do not have to compete with rivals to win bids.

1) If I remember correctly, as a resident of Bute, scot47 qualifies for a National Entitlement card issued by the Argyll and Bute Council. A National Entitlement card issued by one of the councils in the formal Strathclyde regional council area (such as Argyll & Bute) is entitle to a rail concession fare of £1 single or £1.40 return for rail journeys less than 10 miles within the former Strathclyde regional council area.
Change to Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme Fares - SPT
2) He can always get a Senior rail card which will get him a third off for off peak tickets.
Spare a thought to those of us who don't qualify for concession cards or rail cards!

Re: Die Bahn
I have a Concessionary Travel Card. I also have a Disabled Railcard.. Buying a ticket to a station in England from here on the day of travel is still prohibitively expensive. Elderly relatives have an inconvenient habit of passing on without giving warning.
