Depends on what you like
I like Hamburg and Munich. And I also like smaller cities in the South of Germany.

Munich is quite expensive. It is usually ranked as one of the most expensive cities in Germany for renting. Followed by other Southern German cities. The most expensive city form the North is usually Hamburg. Berlin is relatively cheap and offers lot of cultural activities. However, the job markets for most professions are much better in the South, the salary as well. Unemployment in Munich is around 5%, in Berlin around 13%. Munich is close to the mountains, Berlin and Hamburg have lots of lakes and rivers

I used to live in Mainz, just across the Rhein from Wiesbaden. Both have easy access to Frankfurt (both airport and city centre) via S-Bahn.
Mainz is fairly cheap, Wiesbaden & Frankfurt less so.
Would recommend.

There's going to be lots of accommodation available in Paderborn, Bielefeld, Bergen-Hohne. Should bring the prices down.

Munich is by far the most pleasant small town, if you can afford it. We have lived here for over 40 years and find it an ideal location. OK we dont live in Munich itself, but on the outskirts in the Lake District, with a direct connection via train (SBahn) to Munich.

I grew up in Mainz, then moved to Munich . I like both very much. Other favourites of mine are Freiburg and Heidelberg, where I also spent a lot of time. I've never really liked Düsseldorf.

Where in Mainz did you live? I rented a house in Bretzenheim for 2 years and then bought one in Heidesheim-am-Rhein, which as you know is about 12 km west of the city.
I was working at the Uni-Kampus.
