Moving to the USA - What should I take?

One of the frequent threads we see here on British Expats is deciding which of your possessions to take with you when you move to the USA and what to get rid of and re-buy when you get out there.

The key areas to consider are:
  • the cost of buying new vs. the cost of shipping
  • the stress and time factors in shopping for new items
  • the emotional impact of having familiar items around you (or on the flip side the clean slate of a fresh start)
  • what items will and won't work in the USA
  • what you're legally allowed to import and what might be restricted/prohibited by the border protection authorities

We've recently written an article with some tips in these areas which should hopefully help you to start making a few decisions. Check it out on our website http://www.bournes-uts.co.uk/news/entryid/87/shipping-household-goods-to-america-what-to-take-with-you-and-what-to-leave-behind.aspx

Did you take everything and wish you hadn't or did you leave alot behind and wish that you'd taken something with you? Be great to hear some thoughts from those of you who've already made the journey!
