Tax identification number
Does anyone know how or when you get old of a tax identification number in France? We have only been here since July and unsure if this is issued as and when we complete our first tax return.
We have notified our banks in the UK of tax exemption and completed endless tax forms before leaving the UK etc, but they want this TIN number?

Re: Tax identification number
It should be possible to go down to your local tax office and ask for one; by registering for the tax habitation this should be possible

You won't get a tax number until you have submitted your 1st return and then received your devis. This will not happen until September or November 2012. I believe you may be able to go and ask for one in advance of that but it will do you little good, read more below.
The tax forms come out in May and first time round you will have to visit your local Hotel des Impots and ask for them. After that they will be sent to you automatically or you can do your return online.
I don't know which forms you have filled out but in essence there are really only two which matter.
When you leave the UK you should submit form P85 to HMRC. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/p85.pdf This transfers your records to the CNR (center for non-residents) who should then send you form FD5 or France Individual as it is also called. http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/cnr/france-individual.pdf
You complete this, both English and French parts, and submit it with your 1st French return. Eventually, and after your tax return has been processed, it will be stamped and forwarded to HMRC and it's only upon receipt of that, which is the first official proof that you are French resident and registered in the French tax system, which will lead them to authorise payment of interest and pensions etc. net of UK tax.
Any tax you have paid in the interim can be reclaimed but don't hold your breath as it's quite common for this to take many many months.
