Public Holidays in May
Hi,
just a reminder to all that May 2012 has 4 Public holidays, all of which form "Ponts" or "Viaducs", which means long weekends and traffic jams.
Tomorrow, 1st May, Tuesday 8th May (end of WWII), Thursday 17th (Ascension) and Monday 28th (Whit Monday).
All Public Administrations are closed, no Post, SNCF "Sunday service", supermarkets usually open in the morning, only "Pharmacies de Garde" open. Ring 15 for medical emergencies or go direct to your nearest Urgences.
Hope this is of help to relative newcomers who have never encountered a French Jour Férié!
Bonnes Fêtes!

Thanks for that, didn't know about 15 for medical emergencies. I though it was 112.
We need to find out nearest A and E. I know one but thats about 25 mins away. Hoping there is one nearer but I'm not holding out much hope.

And in fact, if you're in a rural area, the Pompiers will probably come more quickly than the SAMU. They always have a Doctor on-call. Find out your local landline number in advance, or ring the 18.
All these emergency numbers are of course valid for accidents or emergencies on any days of the year, but they are essential to know for Sundays and Public Holidays in particular, in case your G.P. is off-duty (or doesn't do home-visits anyway).
that no one will need this info!
