How to control Leylandii Hedge
Any advice as to what to do about Leylandii hedge - not planted by us but on our property? It goes onto a small lane with 2 houses - one not occupied but used by owner for various noisy activities, the other also very noisy. One of them has been complaining about hedge - ringing door bell a night, letters etc. It has been cut down from time to time but is a huge expensive job which I have to employ gardeners to do. It does not block out any light to other house as it's on their north side. Is there anything to control Leylandii growth? The product Scott's Cutlass is only available in USA now. Searched threads - one says - use vinegar on Leylandii?! Does not seem strong enough! What are the actual regulations in France? And what are the penalties? Just driving down the road - there are many uncut leylandii hedges.

Did they give a valid reason for their complaint? Did they complain to the former owner?

gives info on the regulations concerning plantations. There doesn't seem to be a limit for the height of hedges, but, over 2m tall, they must be planted at least 2m from the boundary. If there's less than 0.5 m between the hedge and the boundary, the hedge must be no taller than 2m.
Ask at your Mairie for any local bye-laws, to make sure of your obligations, and rather than treat topically, which might not have the desired result and even pollute the surrounding vegetation, pay a gardener to keep the hedge "conforme". Any other uncut leylandii hedges aren't your concern...

Thanks very much for your reply - planning to contact Mairie tomorrow, if he is taking calls.
Just to add - last time the hedge, which is about 50 m. long, was cut it took 2 men 3 sessions of 4 hours i.e. 24 hours of work - so expensive - info. for anyone thinking of planting this tree.
