House for business. Long term rental
Hello,
Currently my wife and I (both uk citizens from Yorkshire and Edinburgh) run a very successful wedding planning company in Koh Samui in Thailand. We have been doing this here for the last 4 years and have just had a baby daughter so have begun to think about a move back to Europe. Prior to moving to Thailand I owned (the business not the buildings) and operated three bar restaurants in Edinburgh which are still running today.
What we are looking for: We would like to move to South of France and have our own wedding venue. We would like to find a countryside/coastal property that we could lease on a long term basis, (10 years?) to invest in as a business and wedding venue. In an ideal world we would like to have an option to buy the property after 3-5 years. We would also consider undertaking an unfinished property to completion. Please be advised we are looking in other places in Europe too if you see this on another forum. Thanks for any help.

I imagine it might be difficult to rent a house to be used as a business where the "public" will be allowed entry, some one more in the know will come along to advise.
You wouldn't be able to have official wedding ceremonies conducted on the property, as the Maire is the only Public Officer competent. It may be possible for him to officiate outside a Municipal building, if one of the fiancés is physically incapable of attending the Civil Ceremony at the Mairie, but that is rare. On the other hand, you could obviously arrange an unofficial celebration and festivities after the Civil Ceremony.
How's your French? It needs to be adequate to cope with the inevitable Bureaucracy when setting up and running a business. Not to mention the crippling Côtisations and Taxes that your company would involve.
I'd Google Wedding organisers in France to see what potential competition there is from established companies.
Just my thoughts, in the present uncertain, even troubled, times in France....
Take a look at this thread

in petitefrançaise's posts concerning a wedding organiser that she knows in Perpignan

Well, Anna my friend, lives in France and is married to a french guy. She speaks Catalan, French and regular Spanish..... and doesn't just do weddings, she had to expand out a bit to make sure she had all year round business. Not many people get married in the middle of winter.....!
Personally, I wouldn't start a business in France with unreliable income. The tax/social security set-up is pretty onerous. Anna's family are there and so she has her business in France - she has connections from years of doing event organising for a large mult-national and of course she has nurtured her french ones. Going in cold would be really hard and that's not even thinking about where you are going to get customers. Look for a business that's selling up - people move on and sell profitable businesses - even if it's just for the contacts list.
