Welcome to the Forum, I suspect there would be a few places on the med coast around Banyuls sur mer although it might get a bit hot for you there to be out all day.

Kia Ora from New Zealand BarbaraP.
Obviously, I'm not in France at all but saw your post and thought I'd say Hi anyway.

Have you considered WWoofing. ( click the link) We have people come here to NZ, under that scheme,to do grape picking etc.

Hi, "HelpX" is similar to Wwoofing, but be aware that, however fit you are, grape-picking is back-breaking and the sun can be blisteringly hot in September in the Languedoc-Roussillon!

Thamks for all the replies. We saw something on TV recently but lost the contact details. It was working for 4 hours a day only - presumably before the heat kicks in. The "pickers" actually sit on stolls, fill a basket and them simply move the stoll along the line and repeat this for the 4 hours. The baskets are removed by others from time to time. What we want to do is go this year to see it for ourselves and then if we find something suitable, go for 10 days back next year for a longer period.

I'd look at Champagne (the region not the bubbly). Not so ruddy hot.
