Default French Lawyers

There's no French equivalent to a British Solicitor.

The two main types of French lawyers are Avocats and Notaires.

An Avocat is Member of a Bar and advises you on civil and criminal matters, pleading before the Court if necessary, in all types of Court. It is a "profession libérale" = private.

A Notaire is a Public Officer who deals with property conveyancing, Wills, etc... He is unbiassed, i.e. he doesn't take sides between the Vendor and Buyer, but ensures that the sale is conducted in accordance with the Law and that the proper Taxes are levied (and paid). He also advises on how best to protect every one's interests in the case of joint-ownership by unmarried couples, for example, and complicated family situations, proposes solutions and draws up Wills accordingly.

A Huissier is a third type of lawyer, also a Public Officer, the equivalent of a Bailiff/Process server. He collects debts, and also makes official affidavits for future Court procedures, after noting poor workmanship, various nuisances,...

All three French lawyers are addressed as "Maître".
Where I've written "he", "she" is obviously also understood!

Corrections and additions welcome!
