Default French health care for a EU visitor.

Hi, popping in from Italian here for a friend. Will an EU citizen hospitalised in Corsica and air lifted to mainland France be charged anything?

More info is needed - has he/she got an EHIC issued by the EU country in question? Have they got private travel insurance? Does their Credit Card include such insurance? Was the hospitalisation caused by a third party?
With that info, someone in-the-know will come along to advise. Soirry I can't help, the situation sounds very serious....

Yes, EHIC. Don't think any credit cards in Italy have insurance and they only have private insurance for the ferry journey. No third party, a real medical emergency.

Fingers crossed that if the Corsican hospital couldn't cope, then the French Sécu will cover the "transport sanitaire" on the basis of emergency cover by the EHIC.

I suspect that, at the very least, the repatriation will have to be paid for, the EHIC doesn't cover this, neither do most countries, which is why it's ALWAYS vital to have proper travel insurance for health issues, Spain to UK repatriation costs at least £10,000.

But it's not repatriation as such. Corsica to mainland France is within the same country and Social Security Regime. Repatriation back to Italy would be a different matter....

If the transportation to the mainland is a clinical decision in regard to an emergency then no contribution will be asked. This is the same for a French person.
It won't prevent them sending a bill but you just need to take or send it to the local health insurance office. It is not unknown for the bureaucracy to take several years over this.
