Cycle carriers in France
Does anyone have any useful information on the laws on cycle carriers in France? I understand that after reading cycle forums, the gendamerie seem to be more in favour of towbar cycle carriers, rather than the antiquated strap carriers, but cannot find the regulations on what is accepted and not accepted legally, when touring safely with a bike on a car.
As far as tow bars etc are concerned, I am looking at Norauto for fitting, and maybe their make of towbar cycle carriers too. I am also checking reviews on Thule also.
Any advice gratefully received please?

I think the main issue is that number plate and back lights can be seen. Failing that, an extra lighting board needs to be added which would plug into the towbar socket. Having said that, I've seen plenty of cars around with both lights and number plate completely hidden, so no sure if the police are actually bothered at all.
I have a towbar system which can take up to 4 bikes, bought mail-order from Maxxtraxx and it does the job perfectly for me. I think its a lot more stable and robust than the ones you clip onto the bootlid, and can fold down to give access to the boot if needed.

Thanks for the advice. I have now ordered a towbar, and similar bike rack, so will see how we get on. We have been using a strap cycle carrier, ut have to admit, think it would be safer using a towbar set up. As long as we keep the Gendermarie happy!
