Default Best heating (cooling) system?

Wood, electric, PAC, oil, etc...

In very broad terms, what's the most efficient and most cost-effective at prices these days? Assume a reasonably well-insulated property, probably stone built. Brittany area, say, Cote d'Amore.

Is Air conditioner necessary in these parts? Or very large umbrella....

JWL - I've no idea as to the answer to your queries, but I imagine that someone who lives in Brittany will be able to answer you in a slightly more polite manner. Good luck.

No offence, but you really have to know that is such an overworked phrase now...

No problem, I'm thick skinned. Although I did do a Google to see how many of babyposer's 270 posts here were 'Google is your Friend'...

Haha well said!

Sorry just thought you were a bit off topic, I don't understand the link between heating and France...

balding_potter, I know you don't like me because of our little 'argument' about crème fraîche, but I maintain what I said last time: yes, most Brits drink Yorkshire tea (and not green tea), so what?

I don't...I drink PGTips...and I'm from Yorkshire.

What a strange person you are.

Never mind. Let's let JWL get the answers to his question in a civilised manner, shall we?

(Oh, and the last thing that Google is, is your friend. If you believe that, you're simply not keeping up.)

Google may be many things, but my friend it is not - more like an uninvited guest, or even a spy...
...I for one, tend to avoid it, and use alternatives.

Having rented a number of places in France over the years, I'd immediately answer your query in saying, gas, gas, and nothing but gas. Electric heating is convenient, but suggest you forget it for cost reasons. Wood chippings (or whatever it's called these days) is becoming very popular I believe for cost reasons, although having never used it, know little more - except to say that delivery/storage has to be considered.
As for oil, as far as I recall it was always nasty, smelling stuff - personally I wouldn't entertain it, plus believe it tends to be rather expensive.
As for air conditioning in Cote d'Amore/Brittany, I'd say have a good look around whilst there. Are conditioning system 'warts' in abundance on the outside of properties there? Do many appliances appear in the stores, supermarkets etc? If they're there, that should give a measure of indication that some value the need for air conditioning.

Just being logical.

But, it's what I love about this site. I mean, other sites you can go to and ask about heating methods or whatever and you get an answer, but there's a sense of 'OK, what do I do with the rest of the evening?' and you sit there rocking back and forward for a few hours, staring at the wall.

Now here, it's an entirely different game. And game it is, so clear the schedule for a full evening's work. I'm learning to approach the challenge of posting a question like a game of chess, or that great 1970s game of military strategy 'Campaign' and similar games of strategy and manoeuvre.

I post a question, hardly really expecting a serious answer, then settle back to see who'll be first to [all hypothetical] (a) tell me Google is my friend, (b) say this has been discussed a million times already, (c) get aggressive where vested interests clash, (d) question whether France is really the place for me, (e) reply without bothering to read the thread.

Then I make a game plan strategy based on my extensive knowledge of 18th to 20th century military history, and off we go....

Sod the heating - great fun, eh?

Excellent, I think we should have this in a "How the BE forum really works" thread.
