Whingeing Aussies in New Orleans

The scene in New Orleans is total devastation, murder, rape - you name it. It must be the nearest thing to hell if you did not heed the orders to evacuate in a timely manner - or were one of the natives without the wherewithall to get out.

Then we get the TV pictures of whingeing fit young Australians banging on about how the Australian government "hasn't sent helicopters" for them and "doesn't care". Just what on earth do they expect - or perhaps they think that the US is the ninth state?

If you want a picture of the dependent society - watch the news at the moment.

Whinging whining aussies blaming Mr Howard for not sending in a plane to get them  There are ?? million people stranded but we must 31 aussies preference, australia really does come across as a shallow nation sometimes, not to mention self important and very naive.

Someone should point out to them that at least they can come home - the poor people around them no longer have any homes

Those tourists were all evacuated along with europeans etc and other nationalities as they were are target for violence and rape. You do understand that there have been confirmed rapes and murders inside the sports ground where everyone is stranded. The American Govt. is cleaerly not doing enough and I think it's only fair that people look to their own govt's to protect them. I don't think it was an insensitve request.

TV might be bad here :D , but even we get major news, sept 11 type events so yes we do know how bad it is there.

Try looking at it like this, this summer an area the size of the state of Victoria and part of NSW get wiped out, thousands are dead, millions are stranded and 31 poms start stamping their feet that Mr Blair didnt send in a BA flight to get them out

Besides everyones being rather critical of the USA and some of that is justified, but how would australia cope with a mega disaster that size, we have far less emergency equipment, personel, and troops than the USA. How long was it since our last cyclone ;) :scared:

If I wanted to get any real picture of any society around the world I doubt I would resort to the world media :)

They have their place of course - its just that sometimes that place should be at the bottom of pond feeding....:D

A little bit south of the main zone but yep highly possible, and long overdue if what the locals say is correct

Prefer that to the southern states, risking a few zillion acre bushfire put me right off when we visted a school near emerald and it had a nice metal room for the kids in the event of major bushfire coming through before they could get out

Anyway lets hope we dont get to see how our emergency services cope this summer.

I am always amazed how at any given disaster/event around the world the Australian media will manage to dig up some angle to associate themselves with it then bleat loud and long about how either a: good they are or b:hard done by they are or c: about how crap everyone else is.

What I don't understand is though - the US government won't let consulate officals in to help their own but allow the whole of the worlds media in to film corpses floating in the flood waters and thousands of people in a terrible state.
