A completely superficial thread but a couple of questions arose out of recent discussions at home....

1. How much is fish for everyday eating in perth? Lived in places where it is absolutely cheap - £3 equiv for a whole tuna - and places ilike the Uk where you pay £6 per kilo for cod. Family are big fish eaters so can anyone give an idea so that we can dream?

2. Secondly, during Boxing Day's and yesterday's earthquake I can't recall reading of any tsunami warning for WA. Is there a reason for this? It seams to be in the line of fire from any earthquakes on the Java trench/Sumatran faults.

Tsunami waves reach Perth

Two small tsunami waves hit the Perth area this morning, triggered by a huge earthquake in waters off Indonesia.

Dr Mark Leonard, from Geoscience Australia, said two small waves of 10cm and 12cm had swept down Western Australia's coastline and reached Perth at about 10.20am (AEST).

Initially, two more waves were expected but these were not showing up on data at present, he said.

A huge earthquake, measuring 8.7, struck 200 km of the north west coast of Sumatra at about 2am (AEST) today raising fears of a repeat of the devastating Boxing Day tsunami, which killed about 300,000 people.

Dr Leonard said a 23cm tsunami detected this morning by monitoring equipment in the Cocos Islands was significantly smaller than the 35cm wave recorded there following the Boxing Day quake.

The US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has issued a bulletin saying no major tsunami has been detected near the epicentre of the quake.

A TSUNAMI warning has been cancelled for Western Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology said today.

Following a huge earthquake off Indonesia, waves of between 25 to 30cm were recorded at the port of Geraldton, 420km north of Perth, and waves of up to 50cm were reported at Penguin Island, off Rockingham, 50km south of Perth.
Bureau of Meteorology weather services manager Grahame Reader said that was the extent of the impact on WA so far, and there appeared to be no remaining threat.

"The tsunami warning is now cancelled. Really, there is no danger for the West Australian coast although people on or near the water should take caution for the rest of the day (because of) unusual currents and tidal activity."

The earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale, struck about 2.15am (AEST) off the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Mr Reader said a 23cm quake-generated wave was recorded at 2.30am (WST) off the Cocos Islands, an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean 2,950km north-west of Perth.

The Bureau of Meteorology in Perth issued a tsunami alert warning early this morning for some coastal regions of Western Australia, indicating they could be affected by tsunami waves of between one and two metres.

"Subsequent to that the only report we have had from the West Australian coastline is from Geraldton at 6am (WST) this morning where an estimated 25 to 30cm wave was recorded," he said.

"Probably now it has basically passed or travelled through Fremantle and around past Cape Leeuwin so the actual tsunami warning has been cancelled and really we're just saying people on and around the water should exercise a bit of caution."

Mr Reader added an unofficial report from Penguin Island of a 50cm wave had also been received.

"It is small and probably for the most part are going to need a fairly sensitive measuring instrument to see it. I don't think you would actually see it if you were down at the beach," he said.

"There are other gauges around the coastline and I would think that at a later stage we would get other similar reports."

My partner here in Belfast (who is a bit of a dag ) says what you could do: is wait for a tsunami to pass, then just pick up all the stranded fish on the beach... he recommends the Barramundi.

1. price of fish and seafood is a bit like fruit and vegetables: it fluctuates.

Cod is generally cheap at around $6-8 a kilo. Price varies from around $6 a kilo right up to near $30 a kilo for salmon steaks. Many varieties are available in the $10-$20 a kilo range. best place to buy them from an economy point of view(in Perth) is at action supermarkets. they scale, clean and fillet free of charge.

2. Was no tsumani warning for WA because it never presented a threat aside from boaties being advised to tie their boats down . Water level only had rises of around 30cm here in Perth.
