I have never seen a community pull together as I have over this last week. It's been traumatic for many, at times scary but above all else it's been a huge eye opener of the fragility of life. The people out there fighting this monster of a fire are exhausted but ask them if they need to swap out and they'll stay doing what they have been trained to do. The emotional scars will take much longer to heal I fear xx

The sad thing to see is the number of people - not necessarily in the affected area - who are criticising the firefighters for not trying hard enough to save people's homes.
Firefighters who have put their own lives at risk, and in some cases left their families to cope alone, and lost their own houses, are being attacked for not trying hard enough. For anyone who knows how hard it is to try to control a bushfire of that intensity, comments like that are insulting, hurtful and depressing. The Waroona fire scared everyone with its intensity and speed words fail me when I see people criticising the firefighters. They don't ask for prise, they are doing their jobs but likewise they don't ask to be condemned.

I agree Polly. People are critisising firefighters and complaining that they had no water to defend their homes. All of the warnings put out by DFES clearly say not to depend on mains water because power cuts means that there may not be enough water. And to try to defend against a fire of that size with a garden hose is only asking for trouble.

My partner's son in law (volunteer firefighter from another town 80 km away) spent days up in the area at great cost to him (he owns his own business, so no work = no pay), but he's critisised for not doing more.

People forget so many of these firefighters are volunteers, don't they.

I gather the main reason for the water being cut off was that the fire had already damaged the power lines needed to get water through - what do they expect the firefighters to do? Form a chain with buckets all the way back to Mandurah?
Australia is a land that needs fire to regenerate itself. Unfortunately that impacts on its people, but they just have to cope with it, its part of living here. To criticise exhausted Firies is just beyond comprehension.

Drove through Dunalley in Tasmania yesterday, the village that was almost wiped out by a fire a couple of years back. Huge areas are now just flat grass, in positions where a building would have once stood, large areas of trees regrowing but still clearly affected, and so many brand new homes. Odd feeling looking at the new homes (all the old wooden ones are gone) and realising they are built where the previous ones burnt down, and that the people went through hell but are still here - most of them had no chance to leave and had to shelter in the river. Driving over the bridge which made headlines in a photo with a family sheltering beneath it - really makes you think about the power of fire - and the fragility of life.

I agree it's horrid to hear the finger of blame being pointed at those who did everything they could and more to help. Unfortunately it's human nature to look for a scapegoat...not saying it's right. My friends mother is one of the lucky (?) ones....she escaped driving through the Yarloop flames to safety....her husband stayed and saved their house. I believe Yarloop will rebuild...it'll never be the same again but different can be just as special as that tiny hamlet was before all this. At one stage we had items packed and ready to go given the word. My heart broke at the community meeting at the evacuation centre......so many broken memories. The firies and everyone else involved in this monster fire have been and continue to be amazing. Many of my colleagues haven't slept for longer than a couple of hours since it started......we hug each other, it's a special time despite the agony.
