Default Tropical Cyclone Debbie, North Queensland

Landfall currently expected between Townsville and Proserpine, probably around Ayr, on Tuesday morning, but this may change as T C Debbie is moving slowly and deepening. It is possible she may become a Category Five (the highest) before making land.

Tonwsville Council have an excellent Facebook page with relevant info including storm surge zones.

https://www.facebook.com/TownsvilleD...rInfo/?fref=ts

If you are anywhere between Mackay and Cardwell make sure you have an adequate cyclone kit and can cope with prolonged power outages. Extra resources are being moved into the region before the expected impact but there will be a huge cal on those resources and anybody requiring the emergency services (including the SES) should be prepared to be patient. The SES especially will be stretched to capacity so expect to wait fo a response, they will get to everyone but it may take time.

If an incident is (or becomes) life-threatening - - Call 000
For SES assistance -- Call 132500.

Evacuation of Residents in Burdekin Coastal Communities - Queensland Police News

Evacuation of Residents in Burdekin Coastal Communities

The Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) wishes to advise of a directed evacuation of residents in Alva Beach, Groper Creek, Jerona, Wunjunga and some areas of Rita Island due to Tropical Cyclone Debbie.
Tropical Cyclone Debbie is currently a Category 2 system and is likely to reach Category 4 intensity at the time of crossing the Queensland coast.
Based on current forecasts a significant storm tide is expected across the Burdekin Shire Council area.
The Storm Tide is expected to effect and inundate the coastal communities of Alva Beach, Groper Creek, Jerona, Wunjunga and some areas of Rita Island. Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services and Minister for Corrective Services, the Hon. Mark Ryan MP has declared a disaster situation under Section 64 of the Disaster Management Act 2003 and therefore a directed evacuation of these areas has commenced.
If your property is located in these areas, you should finalise your cyclone preparations and packing of your evacuation kit and evacuate the coastal communities by Monday morning.
Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group Chair, Cr. Lyn McLaughlin advised that residents should seek shelter with friends or family in safer places, to remove yourself from the Storm Tide risk.
“If you are unable to find alternative accommodation, the Place of Refuge at the Ayr Showgrounds will be opened on Monday 27 March, 2017 at 8am as a place of last resort.”

Cape Cleveland area residents directed to evacuate - Queensland Police News

Cape Cleveland area residents directed to evacuate

Residents living in the Cape Cleveland area – including Cungulla and Cleveland Palms are directed to evacuate.

The Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) issued the advice tonight based on updated forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology, which puts the area at significant risk of storm surge from Cyclone Debbie.

TLDMG chair and Mayor Jenny Hill said residents in the affected area should finalise preparations immediately and seek shelter with friends or family in the Yellow, Blue or White zones.

“This is a directed evacuation for residents in the Cape Cleveland areas, including Cungulla and Cleveland Palms,” Cr Hill said.

“People need to make arrangements to leave the area as soon as possible. Police will be in the area from 6am tomorrow (Monday) to ensure everyone relocates. An on-going police presence will continue in the area throughout this weather event.

“Residents should not go to the AIMS facility on Cape Cleveland Rd as it is deemed not suitable for a Category 3 cyclone or above by the Department of Housing and Public Works.”

Residents should follow the following actions:

first option is to shelter with family and friends.
Secure property, turn off power, gas and solar invertors before you leave.
People who have no other alternative accommodation can call the Disaster Coordination Centre on 1800 738 541 for advice.

Domestic pets can be taken to places of refuge and arrangements will be made for their safe shelter.

Location: within 35 kilometres of 18.6 degrees South 150.6 degrees East, estimated to be 400 kilometres east of Townsville and 285 kilometres east northeast of Bowen.

Movement: slow moving.

Tropical cyclone Debbie is expected to continue moving west-southwest towards the north Queensland coast while potentially developing into a severe tropical cyclone during today. Tropical cyclone Debbie is forecast to make landfall between Rollingstone and Proserpine on Tuesday morning.

Hazards:
GALES are now occurring about the Whitsunday Islands, and are expected to extend to the exposed coast and islands elsewhere between Ayr and Mackay this morning. GALES could extend to remaining coastal and adjacent inland areas between Lucinda and St Lawrence later today before potentially extending further north to coastal areas between Innisfail and Lucinda on Tuesday.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with gusts over 125 km/h may develop about the exposed coast and islands between Ayr and Mackay later this morning. These DESTRUCTIVE WINDS may then gradually extend further north to Lucinda during today and overnight into Tuesday.

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of tropical cyclone Debbie is forecast to cross the coast between Rollingstone and Proserpine on Tuesday morning with wind gusts potentially to 230 km/h near the centre.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS and GALES could extend inland to Charters Towers, Mount Coolon, and Pentland later on Tuesday as the weakening cyclone moves inland.

Abnormally high tides are expected to occur south of Proserpine on the high tides today.

Residents between Lucinda and Mackay are specifically warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast on Tuesday morning. The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline as the cyclone approaches the coast on Tuesday. Large waves may also develop along the beachfront. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities.

Areas of heavy rain with the potential to cause severe flash flooding are expected to develop about parts of the northern and central Queensland coast and adjacent inland areas later today and continue through Tuesday. Widespread daily rainfall totals of 200 mm, with isolated falls of 400 mm, are also likely to lead to major river flooding over a broad area next week, and a Flood Watch is current for coastal catchments between Cardwell and Gladstone, extending inland to the eastern Gulf River catchments.

BOM model keeps putting it's landfall up near Ayr/Townsville, but other models suggest Whitsundays between midnight tonight and early next morning.
