Might sound like a dumb question, but who names the cyclones?

When a tropical low intensifies into a tropical cyclone between 10°S and 40°S and between 90°E - 160°E, then it will be named by one of the Tropical Cyclone Warning Centers in Perth, Darwin, or Brisbane. TCWC Darwin also has responsibility for the area between the Equator and 10°S between 125°E and 141°E. Starting with Anika, the names are assigned in alphabetical order with the lists used in rotating order without regard to year.[8][10]

Either that or Polly does it!

You can write to the Bureau and ask for a name to go on the list, because after a major event, such as Larry or Monica, a name is removed and has to be replaced. They have said they do consider all requests, but they won't use names in the current political arena - hence last year Quentin was removed, and Anna and Julia can't be used.

Other areas of the world have their own lists - hence the use of Ului last season, and the next one brewing will probably start in Fiji's area, so will be called Yasi, next name on their list.

My namesake looks like it's going to pile ashore somewhere near Townsville on Sunday. Hopefully it won't climb above a Category 2 and maybe just maybe it won't trouble Cairns...

This is the US Navy's advice. It has to be cat 3 (in aus money) to count as a cyclone for the US. So this is extra confirmation that Anthony shouldn't get above cat 2. Which, I'm sure, will be good news to many.

LOCATED NEAR 15.1S 154.0E, APPROXIMATELY 495 NM EAST-NORTHEAST OF

DEPICTS A FULLY-EXPOSED AND WEAKENING LOW-LEVEL CIRCULATION CENTER
(LLCC) WITH ISOLATED DEEP CONVECTION FLARING OVER THE EAST QUADRANT.
AN EARLIER ASCAT IMAGE AT 281054Z SHOWED 20-25 KNOT WINDS WRAPPING
INTO A DEFINED LLCC. HOWEVER, RECENT MSI AND A 282052Z TRMM IMAGE
DEPICT A MORE DISORGANIZED SYSTEM WITH WEAK SHALLOW CONVECTIVE
BANDING, SOMEWHAT ELONGATED, WITH ISOLATED DEEP CONVECTION DISPLACED
ABOUT 120 NM SOUTHEAST OF THE CENTER. THE TOTAL PRECIPITABLE WATER
PRODUCT INDICATES THAT THE SYSTEM IS EMBEDDED WITHIN A RELATIVELY

Yep, latest track map agrees, might intensify towards the coast but it looks like he'll decay rapidly.

A Cyclone WARNING has been declared for coastal and island communities from Lucinda to Proserpine.

A Cyclone WATCH is now current for coastal and island communities from Innisfail to Lucinda and Proserpine to Saint Lawrence.

At 7:00 pm EST Tropical Cyclone Anthony, Category 1 was estimated to be
830 kilometres east northeast of Townsville and 750 kilometres northeast of
Bowen.

DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS are expected to develop about coastal and island
communities close to the cyclone centre as it approaches the coast early Monday morning.

DAMAGING WIND GUSTS are expected to develop about coastal and island communities between Innisfail and St Lawrence late Sunday.

As the cyclone crosses/approaches the coast abnormally high tides are expected
between Townsville and Bowen. Large waves are likely along the beachfront.

HEAVY RAINFALL with LOCAL FLOODING is expected to develop about the coast and the cyclone, extending as far south as Sarina, as it approaches and crosses the coast overnight Sunday.
