Severe Weather Warning
for damaging and locally destructive winds, damaging winds, heavy rainfall and damaging surf
for people in the Metropolitan, Hunter and Illawarra forecast districts

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS FOR THE HUNTER COAST, INCLUDING THE CENTRAL COAST.

DAMAGING WINDS, HEAVY RAIN AND DAMAGING SURF ALONG THE COASTAL FRINGE ILLAWARRA TO HUNTER VALLEY.

Weather Situation
A small intense low pressure system is currently moving towards the NSW Central Coast. Conditions will deteriorate over the next several hours with severe wind gusts and very heavy rainfall likely for peak hour into early evening.

Conditions are expected to slowly ease overnight tonight and into Wednesday as the low gradually begins to weaken.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS averaging 90 to 100 km/h with peak gusts up to 125 km/h are forecast for coastal parts of the Hunter forecast district (including the Central Coast).

DAMAGING WINDS averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts to about 100 km/h are forecast to continue along the coastal fringe of the Metropolitan and Illawarra forecast districts.

HEAVY RAINFALL is likely in the Hunter district including the Central Coast, the Metropolitan and Illawarra districts.

VERY HEAVY SURF which may lead to localised damage and coastal erosion is forecast for the Metropolitan, Hunter and Illawarra forecast districts. Beach conditions in these areas are dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf exposed areas.

Wind gusts to date include: 135 km/h at Norah Head, 120 km/h at Nobby's Head, 110 km/h at Williamtown, 107 km/h at Molineaux Point and Sydney Airport.

Rainfall totals from 9am Monday to 9am Tuesday include: 312 mm at Dungog, 259 mm at Crawford (near Bulahdelah), 186 mm at Wallsend, 172 mm at Wahroonga (Sydney).

Rainfall totals between 9am and 2:00pm include: Maitland 246 mm, Seaham 152 mm and Tocal 132 mm (all in the Hunter Valley).

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
Keep clear of fallen power lines.
Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.

The next warning will be issued by 5:45 pm EST Tuesday.

FLOOD WATCH FOR THE NEW SOUTH WALES COAST FROM THE MANNING VALLEY TO THE CENTRAL COAST (reissue)

Note: This Flood Watch is a "heads up" for possible future flooding along all rivers and creeks within a nominated valley and is NOT a Flood Warning [see note below].

An intense low pressure cell near the boundary of the Hunter and Mid North Coast districts is expected to move gradually south during Tuesday.

Flood Warnings are current for a number of rivers.

At this stage there is a greater than 70% chance of additional flooding in the following river valleys developing during Tuesday:

1. Manning Valley - Gloucester only - minor flooding. Flooding not expected along the Manning River

2. Hunter Valley - including Scone - minor to moderate flooding

3. Lake Macquarie - minor flooding

4. Wyong Valley - Tuggerah Lake - minor flooding

5. Georges River - minor flooding

5. Cooks River - some minor flooding possible at high tide around 10:30pm Tuesday night

A Severe Weather Warning is also current for this event.

This Flood Watch means that people living or working along rivers and creeks must monitor the latest weather forecasts and warnings and be ready to move to higher ground should flooding develop. Flood Warnings will be issued if Minor Flood Level is expected to be exceeded at key sites along the main rivers for which the Bureau of Meteorology provides a flood warning service. Across NSW over 70% of Flood Watches are followed by flooding within the catchment.

Three people have died as the Hunter region cops the worst of the cyclonic conditions battering NSW.

A woman and two men, all believed to be elderly, have died in Dungog, which has recorded more than 312mm of rain in 24 hours.

The news follows dramatic footage of a house floating down a street in the small town.

The east coast low is expected to pound NSW for another 12 hours before easing on Wednesday morning.

The SES has described the weather conditions as the state's worst in five years.

Premier Mike Baird has called for patience as emergency crews deal with life-threatening situations during the storms.

Mr Baird says people need to be patient while authorities focus very clearly on the critical services in health and aged care.

He said there had been more than 4500 calls for assistance and up to 1000 calls to triple-zero.

'We will get to you,' Mr Baird said.

In a life-threatening emergency people should call triple-zero, otherwise the SES number was 132 500.

Flood EVACUATION WARNING for areas adjacent to Manly Lagoon

As a result of the flood level predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology for areas adjacent to Manly Lagoon within the next few hours, the NSW State Emergency Service recommends that residents within the nominated areas should prepare to evacuate. Residents should monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate when instructed to do so.

A Flood Evacuation Order will be issued by the NSW SES if evacuation is required. Wherever possible, people should go and stay with family or friends, or make other accommodation arrangements. For people who need assistance an evacuation centre has been set up by Community Services at Harbord Diggers, 80 Evans St, Freshwater, NSW 2096.

As you prepare for evacuation you should:

*Raise belongings by placing them on tables, beds and benches. Put electrical items on top. You may be able to place light weight items in the roof space.

*Collect together medicines, personal and financial documents, mementos and photos

*If possible, check to see if your neighbours need help.

*Make arrangements for care of pets or other animals, or take your pets with you when you evacuate.

*Take three days’ supply of clothing, medicines and personal hygiene products.

*If you are planning to go to the evacuation centre, take blankets/sleeping bags, pillows and sleeping mats.

*Find out where to turn off the electricity and gas.

*Continue to listen to a local radio station for updates.

*Never drive ride or walk through floodwater.

As a result of the flood level predicted by the Bureau of Meteorology for Georges River at 4:00pm the NSW State Emergency Service is directing residents within the area of:

Rickard Road
Arthur Street
Riverside Drive, between Arthur Street and Newbridge Rd
Newbridge Road, between Rickard Rd and Governor Macquarie Dr
Davey Robinson Drive
to evacuate immediately.

Do not delay your evacuation. Roads will be congested or closed. You could become trapped and need rescue. Remaining in flooded areas is dangerous and may place your life at risk.

Wherever possible, people should go and stay with family or friends, or make other accommodation arrangements. For people who need assistance an evacuation centre has been set up by Community Services at Moorebank Community Hall, Nuwarra Rd, Moorebank.

As you evacuate you should;

Take your important documents, mementos and photos.
Take your spare clothing, medicines and personal hygiene supplies.
If you are going to the evacuation centre, take blankets/sleeping bags, pillows and sleeping mats.

I'm sitting in a library. My street lost power and water on Tuesday morning. The power is still out and will be for many more days, as they have to remove the trees and cables and fences and repair the water main and replace the poles before they can reconnect. No phone light, heat etc, and can't get into the garage to deal with the rotting meat in the freezer. Hey ho.

I'm not complaining really. It could have been worse- at least my house didn't get flattened, and the SES and Ausgrid guys have higher priorities than a residential street. I wouldn't like to have to do their job. I hope no one else is badly affected.

its been pretty bad. houses and people swept away in the Hunter valley - reminds me of the Lockyer Valley floods in 2011
We've got at least 50 SES from Brisbane and the southeast of Queensland heading down today to help out the NSW guys.

Sydney hail storm: Parts of city blanketed as severe weather warnings issued for NSW and ACT:

Parts of Sydney and the Blue Mountains have been blanketed by large hailstones as a severe thunderstorm moves across the area.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of severe thunderstorms with large hailstones and damaging wind for the ACT and large parts of New South Wales, including Sydney, the Illawarra, Bathurst, Bega and parts of the Hunter region.
The bureau's Francois Geffroy said hail approximately one to two centimetres in size had been reported in Blackheath.
Heavy hail damaged homes and vehicles in central Sydney suburbs including Surry Hills and Ultimo, while there were reports of severe damage to warehouses in Sydney's west.

The ABC's Mohamed Taha said five warehouses had collapsed in Western Sydney.
Fire and Rescue New South Wales said the buildings in Huntingwood had half-a-metre of hail on their roofs, with the weight of the hail causing the buildings to collapse.
Six people self-evacuated and fire and rescue said no-one was trapped but specialist crews arrived to determine the stability of the buildings.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING for LARGE HAILSTONES and HEAVY RAINFALL
For people in the Metropolitan, Illawarra and parts of the Hunter, Central Tablelands, Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes Forecast Districts.
Issued at 6:12 pm Saturday, 25 April 2015.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Newcastle, Gosford, Sydney, Wollongong, Orange and Katoomba.
Severe thunderstorms are no longer occurring in the South Coast, Snowy Mountains and Australian Capital Territory districts and the warning for these districts is CANCELLED.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Don't walk, ride your bike or drive through flood water.
* If you are trapped by flash flooding, seek refuge in the highest available place and ring 000 if you need rescue.
* Unplug computers and appliances.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* Stay indoors away from windows, and keep children and pets indoors as well.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES (NSW and ACT) on 132 500.
The next warning is due to be issued by 9:15 pm.
If severe thunderstorms develop in Sydney Newcastle Wollongong or surrounding areas, a more detailed Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued to people in this area.
