Re: Weather related disaster/emergency info thread
If it is going to be the wet and wild summer that everyone is predicting, get used to the latest weather buzzword: supercell.
Weather forecasters are warning that more severe storms known as supercells are heading our way.
Weatherzone meteorologist Josh Fisher said Queensland's weather, particularly in the southeast, was being influenced by phenomena favourable for severe storms.
"The supercells (last week) were caused by a trough lingering over Queensland that mingled with the warm daytime temperatures and atmospheric instability," he said.
"Those features are still there to an extent, so we are expecting more storms, potentially even supercells, on Sunday."

Re: Weather related disaster/emergency info thread
From the Queensland forecast for later this week......
Forecast for Thursday
Showers generally over eastern districts, increasing to rain south of about Mackay as a tropical low in the Coral Sea is forecast to move towards the central east coast.
Forecast for Friday
The surface trough remains in the Channel Country while the low in the Coral Sea moves towards the east coast near the Whitsundays. Rain areas over most eastern districts south of Cooktown with moderate to heavy falls possibly near the coast between Bowen and Gladstone. Scattered showers and thunderstorms about the remaining tropics, tending isolated in the southwest.
Outlook for Saturday, Sunday and Monday
The tropical low is forecast to cross the central east coast as a weak system on Saturday. Rain areas to continue about eastern districts south of Cooktown with moderate to heavy falls possible, chiefly south of Bowen.
------------------------------------------------
A Low in the northern Coral Sea is expected to track southwest and cross the Queensland coastline south of Townsville. The Low is NOT expected to develop into a Tropical Cyclone. This could result in the following rainfall:
300-500mm of very heavy rainfall between Bowen and Gladstone.
100-200mm north of Townsville
50-100mm in Brisbane and southeast Qld with some areas experiencing 150-200mm.
The rain will extend inland to the Central Highlands.
Flooding could be expected in Bowen and Mackay, followed later by Rockhampton, depending on the rainfall amounts, specific locations and concentration.

Re: Weather related disaster/emergency info thread
A tropical low heading for the central Queensland coast is expected to cross the coast between Cardwell and Mackay, bringing more rain to already flooded areas.
There is a small chance the low will become a weak tropical cyclone, but it will bring heavy rain to Queensland coastal areas between Townsville and Gladstone by Friday.
Strong winds are expected between Cardwell and St Lawrence.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said today rain areas and local thunder with some moderate to heavy falls will develop about the southeast and central coast and the adjacent inland area. Showers and storms are forecast over the tropics.
==============================================
Possible estimates at present of 200-400mm of rain at the point of crossing, with lessening amounts further down the coast.
The tropics and the southeast of the State can expect more showers and thunderstorms into next week too.
