We all make stupid mistakes in life and often have to pay the consequences but who would have dreamed the fires would be as incredibly destructive as they were. Those people are going through hell. People who paid insurance will get their policies honoured but do you seriously want those without insurance to have the rebuilding of their lives to be delayed after what they have been through? In an ideal world they would all have had insurance but why make them pay in addition to what they have gone through if the money is there for relief work? It seems a huge price to pay! I do have insurance but when you take it out you imagine being burgled or having a bit of a flood, smashing something or a very small house fire, something you could cope with even if the insurance didn't cover you but how could you ever imagine something like that? They all need help regardless of what they did in the past, who they are, how they lived their lives and the choices they made.

Nobody has said they don't need help or that they won't get any money towards rebuilding their lives. The point of the thread was do you think that they should have their house rebuilt for gratis and I think you will see that a majority including myself have said no.
There have been some really good ideas on here, interest free loans, working for the community to pay off the costs etc.
These people took a gamble not to insure and unfortunately in this case it didn't pay off, another alternative would be to give everybody their insurance premiums back and give everybody a free house.
If you take time to read all the previous posts on here and similar threads you will see that the building of free houses for those affected by previous fires have in fact split the communities for the exact reasons most people oppose them.

they may end up with not as much as the other house owners as they can claim on there insurance.
This is exact reason most people oppose it, in the past they have ended up with a darn site more than those who chose to insure their property.
Nobody is kicking them when they are down, like a few other posters I have been up there with the emergency services and believe me people are quite rightly bending over backwards to help them.

I agree with you people have been through so much already why kick them more when there down already, everyone needs help to rebuild there lives and their victims too! so they should get money towards a home, they may end up with not as much as the other house owners as they can claim on there insurance.
