Default And they're off .....

Malcolm is off to the governor as polls stand at 50:50, after the budget. They are going to need this longest campaign to pull it back.

But you vote Green so that would make it 50:49.9999:0.0001.

I can't help feeling this is going to go the way of the UK election. Lots of Labour hope then collapse.

Labour has put a lot of cards on the table. There's not a lot more you can reasonbly do without looking a little foolish. Its all about me me me right now. Nothing about the big picture.

Liberal on the other hand have given the me me me's very little so far and its all about the big picture. They have left a lot of wriggle room and lots of little nuggets they can pull out to satisfy the narrow minds.

Should be interesting.

Turnbull has been average so far that's for sure but Australia-hating Red Bill Shorten?

Heaven help us if he gets the gig

Weeks of Shorten on TV should be his own undoing.

New themes. The "United" Labor party.

and

Trust us.

No wonder Sportsbet has the Libs at a $1.33 and the ALP at $3.35.

Clinton and Trump have similar odds respectively.

Well, that's a pretty safe approach - you'd have to expect Abbott to open his mouth and put his foot in it at some point.

It's interesting when you compare it to the polls, where things are much more finely balanced

Poll of polls: who will win the Australian election? | News | The Guardian

Digging deeper, that seems to be driven by NSW and the result there. My guess is a hung parliament with the independents and crossbenchers having control.

And so the rhetoric, straight off the bat :

Turnbull
"But we must embark on these times, embrace these opportunities, meet these challenges, with a plan and we have laid out a clear economic plan to enable us to succeed."
"Labor claiming to speak for fairness, but in really speaking for nothing more than increasing taxes, stands in the way of Australians getting ahead,"

"Every measure we have laid out, every single one, will deliver stronger economic growth and more jobs... Everything Labor is doing is absolutely calculated to stop our economic progress in its tracks."
Shorten
"A choice between Labor's positive plan for the future and three more years of dysfunction, dithering and disappointment,"
"8 months ago the Australian public thought Malcolm Turnbull could change the Liberal Party, but the Liberal Party have changed him"

"I frankly think it is amazing that in Mr Turnbull's pitch to be re-elected, he did not even mention climate change. He famously said that he did not want to lead a party that was not interested in climate change. Now he has a brushed climate changed out of his presentation altogether."

Frankly I think Shorten has been taking lessons. Much more snappy and to the point - a zinger or two. Turnbull's points aren't borne out by facts (as I'm sure the media will point out) and more passive.

There's a funny thing in sales. The best salesman are able to promote their own product with conviction. The worst salesmen can only ever be critical of their opposition. 'Nuff said really.

ABC have their vote compass up already

https://votecompass.abc.net.au/

I'd be a bit careful about trusting the plot too much, look at each individual dimension and compare answers one by one. In particular they seem to confuse progressive for SJW and then allow it to skew the results.

The questions are skewed to the left but that's the ABC for you.

If Labor relied on union membership alone which stands at 20% they are toast.

Australian unions breed laziness and mediocrity. The country doesn't need that.

I kind of think not.

It looks like Turnbull is going to try to play 'stateman' and 'safe pair of hands' - which given his singular lack of achievement is probably the only game he can try to play.

Shorten can't sit back and let union attack dogs do the work for him - he has to counter Turnbull with vision, change, and fixing up the mess of the LNP misrule (which he also needs to make clear). Like it or not, that means he needs to be out there, and forceful.

Can he do it? We'll find out.
