Details of Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia at 1:00 pm EST:

Intensity: Category 3, sustained winds near the centre of 150 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 205 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 9 kilometres of 23.2 degrees South 150.5 degrees East, estimated to be 25 kilometres west southwest of Yeppoon and 105 kilometres northwest of Gladstone.

Movement: south at 19 kilometres per hour.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia, category 3, continues to move south over the northern Capricornia district and is expected to impact Rockhampton during the next couple of hours. It is expected to continue a southerly movement through today while slowly weakening.

A separate Severe Weather Warning is current south of Double Island Point and inland to the southern Burnett and eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Hazards:

The VERY DESTRUCTIVE CORE of Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia, with gusts to 205 km/h, is currently impacting the Yeppoon and Rockhampton areas.

DESTRUCTIVE WINDS with wind gusts to 160 km/h are expected to extend further south and inland across the Capricornia and Burnett districts today, including Gladstone.

GALES are occurring about some coastal and island communities between St Lawrence and Double Island Point, and are expected to extend inland to areas including Moura, Biloela, Monto, and Mundubbera today and overnight
.

Abnormally high tides will be experienced this morning with water levels expected to rise substantially above the highest tide of the year on the high tide. Note also that abnormally high tides are also likely during this evening's high tide in parts of the warning area even though the cyclone is likely to weaker by then.

Coastal residents between St Lawrence and Double Island Point are specifically warned of the dangerous storm tide as the cyclone crosses the coast, and in the following high tide during this evening. The sea is likely to rise steadily up to a level well above the normal tide, with damaging waves and flooding of some low-lying areas close to the shoreline. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible and be prepared to follow instructions regarding evacuation of the area if advised to do so by the authorities.

Dangerous surf is also expected.

Heavy rainfall is already occurring about coastal and island communities between St Lawrence and Double Island Point, and is expected to extend further inland across the Capricornia, Wide Bay and Burnett, and the eastern parts of the Central Highlands and Coalfields districts later today as the cyclone moves south
. A Flood Watch is current for the area.
Recommended Action:

- People in the path of this very dangerous cyclone should stay calm and remain in a secure shelter - above the expected water level - while the very destructive winds continue.

- Do not venture outside if you find yourself in the eye of the cyclone - (very) destructive winds from a different direction could resume at any time.

- Follow the evacuation advice or directions of Police, Emergency Services personnel and local authorities.

SEVERE WEATHER WARNING for DAMAGING WINDS, HEAVY RAINFALL, ABNORMALLY HIGH TIDES and DANGEROUS SURF

For people in the Southeast Coast and parts of the Wide Bay and Burnett and
Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.


Issued at 11:13 am Friday, 20 February 2015.

Synoptic Situation:

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia crossed the coast near Shoalwater Bay and is moving south. A trough extends southwards from the tropical cyclone to Queensland's southeast coast.

The trough should produce heavy rain and locally damaging wind gusts about the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast districts today, extending inland to the eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district later today or tonight. The heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, with isolated 24 hour totals in excess of 300mm. Damaging wind gusts may reach around 90 km/hr, mostly near the coast and ranges.

Water levels on the high tide are likely to exceed the highest tide of the year today. Dangerous surf conditions and beach erosion are also expected on exposed beaches.

Riverine flooding:

Initial moderate flood warning for the Stanley and Mary rivers, minor flood warning for the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers and Coochin creek.
A flood watch is current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and the Darling Downs & Granite Belt District forecast districts.

Locations which may be affected include Warwick, Gold Coast, Toowoomba, the Lockyer Valley, Ipswich, Brisbane, Caboolture, the Sunshine Coast, Kingaroy and Gympie.


Several locations along the Sunshine coast reported 24hr rainfall totals to 9am this morning of 200mm or more with Ball Lookout on the North Maroochy River reporting 214mm.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.
* Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 5:15 pm.

INITIAL MODERATE FLOOD WARNING FOR THE MARY RIVER

Issue Number: 1

Minor to moderate flood levels developing in the Mary River.

Rainfall totals between 30 and 200 mm have been recorded during the past 24 hours to 9 am Friday, with falls in excees of 100 mm mostly about the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The highest rainfall recorded to 9 am is 208 mm at Baroon Boat Ramp. Further heavy rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours.


MARY RIVER ABOVE GYMPIE:

River levels above Dagun Pocket are rising to minor flood levels.

MARY RIVER AT GYMPIE :

River levels are rising but are still well below the minor flood level (6.0 metres).

MARY RIVER BELOW GYMPIE:

River levels are steady below minor flood levels.
Predicted River Heights/Flows:

MARY RIVER at:

MOY POCKET: May exceed the minor flood level (11.6 metres) overnight Friday.

DAGUN POCKET: Expected to exceed the minor flood level (7.0 metres) overnight Friday.

GYMPIE: Exceed the moderate flood level (12.0 metres) early Saturday.


River level rises above the moderate flood level are expected later in the weekend downstream of Gympie. Predictions for these locations will be made as upstream peaks are observed.

If they are well out at sea they shouldn't be too bad cyclone-wise - most ships put to sea during a crossing as its safer. However if they are off Brisbane where we have a trough bringing all the rain in prior to the cyclone getting down here, it mght be a bit rougher

Intensity: Category 2, sustained winds near the centre of 110 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 155 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 20 kilometres of 23.8 degrees South 150.7 degrees East, estimated to be 60 kilometres west of Gladstone and 65 kilometres north northeast of Biloela.

Movement: south southeast at 18 kilometres per hour.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia has weakened to a category 2 system,and continues to move south over the Capricornia district while weakening. The cyclone is expected to turn to the south-southeast this evening, and weaken below cyclone strength on Saturday morning.

A separate Severe Weather Warning is current south of Double Island Point and inland to the southern Burnett and eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.

Synoptic Situation:

Severe Tropical Cyclone Marcia, category 3, continues to move south over the northern Capricornia district while slowly weakening. The cyclone is expected to turn to the south-southeast this evening, and weaken below cyclone strength on Saturday morning. A trough extends southwards from the tropical cyclone to Queensland's southeast coast.

The trough is currently producing heavy rain about mainly coastal parts of the Southeast Coast district. The approach of Marcia should produce heavy rain and locally damaging winds gusts about the Wide Bay and Burnett Districts south of the Cyclone warning area overnight tonight. Currently, heaviest rain is located on radar near coastal parts from the Sunshine Coast to the Gold Coast. This heavy rain may lead to flash flooding, with possibly up to 150mm of rainfall for the remainder of today.

Although conditions may ease for a period overnight in the South East district, conditions are expected to deteriorate again during Saturday as weakening Marcia moves across the district. These rain and wind conditions may extend inland to the eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district during Saturday but is very dependent on the movement of Marcia. The main rainfall areas at this stage is expected to be near coastal again with some possible 24 hour rainfall totals during Saturday in excess of 300mm. Damaging wind gusts may reach around 90 km/hr, mostly near the coast and ranges.

Water levels on the high tide are likely to be near or exceed the highest tide of the year tomorrow. Dangerous surf conditions and beach erosion are also expected on exposed beaches.

Riverine flooding:

Moderate flood warning for the Stanley and Mary rivers, minor flood warning for the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers and Coochin creek.
A flood watch is current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and the Darling Downs & Granite Belt District forecast districts.

* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Avoid driving, walking or riding through flood waters.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Surf Life Saving Australia recommends that you stay out of the water and stay well away from surf-exposed areas.
* Check your property regularly for erosion or inundation by sea water, and if necessary raise goods and electrical items.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next warning is due to be issued by 10:55 pm.

Details of Tropical Cyclone Marcia at 8:00 pm EST:

Intensity: Category 1, sustained winds near the centre of 85 kilometres per hour with wind gusts to 120 kilometres per hour.

Location: within 30 kilometres of 24.3 degrees South 150.9 degrees East, estimated to be 65 kilometres southwest of Gladstone and 40 kilometres east northeast of Biloela.

Movement: south southeast at 18 kilometres per hour.

Tropical cyclone Marcia has weakened to a category 1 cyclone, and is moving south-southeast over the southern Capricornia district while continuing to weaken. It is expected to weaken below cyclone strength tonight.

Destructive winds are no longer expected at Biloela. Damaging wind gusts to about 120 km/h are still possible over the next couple of hours.


A separate Severe Weather Warning is current south of Double Island Point and inland to the southern Burnett and eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt.
Hazards:

GALES with gusts to 120 km/h are expected about the coast and adjacent inland between Rockhampton and Double Island Point tonight, including Biloela, Monto, and Mundubbera.

Abnormally high tides will be experienced between Gladstone and Double Island Point with water levels expected to rise above the highest tide of the year on the high tide, even though the cyclone is inland. People living in areas likely to be affected by this flooding should take measures to protect their property as much as possible.

Dangerous surf is also expected.

Heavy rainfall is already occurring about coastal and adjacent inland areas between Gladstone and Double Island Point, and is expected to continue tonight and Saturday morning as the cyclone moves south. A Flood Watch is current for the area.

Recommended Action:

People between Rockhamton and Double Island Point and adjacent inland areas including Biloela, Monto and Mundubbera should take precautions and listen to the next advice at 11 pm.

Darling Downs and Granite Belt Forecast Districts.

Synoptic Situation:

Tropical cyclone Marcia has weakened to a category 1 cyclone, and is moving south-southeast over the southern Capricornia district while continuing to weaken. It is expected to weaken below cyclone strength tonight.

The approach of Marcia should produce heavy rain and locally damaging winds gusts about the Wide Bay and Burnett Districts south of the Cyclone warning area overnight tonight. Currently, heaviest rain is located on radar south of Queensland over the northern NSW coast. There is still some risk of some moderate falls near the South East coast up until midnight tonight.


Conditions are expected to ease for a period overnight in the South East district, before deteriorating again during Saturday as the expected ex-Tropical Cyclone Marcia moves across the district. These rain and wind conditions may extend inland to the eastern parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt district during Saturday but is very dependent on the movement of Marcia. The main rainfall areas at this stage is expected to be near coastal again with some possible 24 hour rainfall totals during Saturday in excess of 250mm. Damaging wind gusts may reach around 90 km/hr, mostly near the coast and ranges.

Water levels on the high tide are likely to be near or exceed the highest tide of the year tomorrow. Dangerous surf conditions and beach erosion are also expected on exposed beaches.

Riverine flooding:

Moderate flood warning for the Stanley and Mary rivers, minor flood warning for the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers and Coochin creek.
A flood watch is current for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and the Darling Downs & Granite Belt District forecast districts.
