Illawarra - Flood Warnings

Having felt left of all the 'excitement' that the rest of the country has had of late, I thought it onlt fit and proper that we should have our turn here in the Illawarra... so.....

Severe Weather Warning
for flash flooding
for people in the Illawarra forecast district

Issued at 10:10 pm EDT on Saturday 19 March 2011.

Weather Situation
A trough just off NSW coast draws a deep moist airstream towards the coastal regions.

Lingering showers which may lead to flash flooding are forecast for parts of the Illawarra forecast district during next 6-10 hours.

Areas to be affected include northern parts of Shoalhaven catchment north-northwest of Nowra and adjacent areas just southwest of Wollongong.

Since 9 am Saturday, Barrengarry (The Old School House) picked up 186 mm, Hampden Bridge (Kangaroo River) 122.0 mm, Wongawilli 118.5 mm, Wattamolla (Griffiths) 128.0 mm.

Kangaroo River gauge at Hampden Bridge indicated level rising from 0.5 m to 5.5 m during last few hours.

I've had 120mm down here on the coast, with 17mm of that in the last hour alone.

They reckoned south east Queensland was going to get hammered but I think you got most of it instead. Some flooding inland here though, Roma/Dalby region.
Get your wellies out and stay safe :)

Re: Illawarra - Flood Warnings

Appin Road from Appin to Bulli was under water at about 7pm last night, and we've had another 108 mm since then on the northern beaches. The amount of water pouring of the escarpment is affecting safety on the roads such as Bulli Pass, LHD etc.

Oh and its still raining with plenty more on the way. The radar doesnt look pretty right now.

And here's the latest weather warning issued at 4.27am

I'm staying home today!

Pretty dire in Sydney too - especially in my bedroom where it's currently coming through the ceiling (right over the bed) at an alarming rate.

Ah, wonderful, the DS and his wife and two kids are down there, hoping to get back today, after a wedding. This will be interesting.

And it is still raining heavily, and doesn't look like it is going to let up at all.

Not my finest moment. I chose the area for a weekend break for my husband birthday. I honestly thought we would be stranded here after all that rain, the road was flooding when we arrived.

Never seen anything like it. We have 228mm in the last 24hrs and its still coming and we already have lots of roads closed and flooded.

Some perspective for any folks in the UK reading this. I'm from Manchester, you know, that famously wet city. Well I've had more rain today than the average in Manchester for November, December and January... combined !!

Re: Illawarra - Flood Warnings

It's crazy, even in the city. Driving past Redfern station this morning was like driving through a river.

We'll be having our second night sleeping on a mattress on the master suite floor. We could sleep in the guest room downstairs but we want to keep an eye on the ceiling above where our mattress should be, as it's still dripping and its life expectancy is not great.

(wrote a ton more but bored even myself so edited it out)
