Initially authorities can only guess and hope to God (or Allah) that they have over estimated. They usually haven't! Its only after everything has settled down can people started counting the dead. That can takes weeks for earthquakes.

If you can cast your mind back to the Boxing Day 2004 Tsunamis. Initially it was only a couple of hundred, it took quite some time (weeks) for the final (??) figure of more than 230K to surface.

Bloody awful - poor people. More die if the tremors are overnight as more people are in their beds. Quakes that happen during the day usually mean many less dead.
This is very sad - they're in a very unfortunate part of the world.

Unhappy Re: Hundreds die in Indonesian quake

Poor bastards. Why is it that the people who tend to be lowest on the socio-economic ladder, are also the ones who get the most stick from natural disasters?

Yes...remember that awful mudslide in Honduras when an estimated 100,000 died - that was soon superceded by 9/11 in the news ....followed by more natural disasters - earthquakes and the tsunami.

Like you say...scary, but also like Vash said...sad that these natural disaster hit those people who live in poor parts of the world.
