What kind of place would she be looking for?
Crazy place with young 'uns partying all hours? Or quieter?

There are backpacker places pretty much everywhere in Sydney. Potts Point might be a good starting option as it is close to the busier Kings Cross and Paddington areas and easily walkable to the Opera House and Botanical gardens. A lonely planet guide will give you a list .

Have a look here:

Most places will have enough independant ratings to get a decent idea.

For new years, the YHA in the Rocks may be good - be able to watch the fireworks from the rooftop. They'll need to book very early though.
