Default Free movement proposal - UK, Canada, NZ, Aus

Seems Boris Johnson and Tony Abbot might be supportive. Will it happen though?

Will we be flooded with Poms LOL!

It would be a good idea but the lefties/greenies/anti-west socialists will shout it down as racist/unfair/colonial etc

Why not...? Australia is already so flooded with Kiwis that Kiwi employers actually had a jobs expo in Brisbane last weekend trying to get Aussies to apply for jobs in New Zealand......

Or the righties/neo-cons/anti-intellectuals will shout it down as the asian/eastern european immigrant backdoor to Australia.

Here's the report in question:

How to Solve a Problem like a Visa — Commonwealth Exchange

It's a great idea - but it'll never happen.

Probably

Both the left and right have intellectuals and anti-intellectuals so not a factor

And remember, one man's intellectual is another's man's asshat

Not sure how you can do this without including other commonwealth countries surely ?

It's a great idea, you do have to include India, some of the African countries and the West Indies though. How can you get if through without doing that. ?

Unless there's a means test to go along with it. I'm a lefty and I'd support the means test proviso.

Probably both. But surely it would be limited to persons who had gained citizenship in each of the nations? While EU citizens are able to come and live and work in the UK, it's a whole different ball game trying to get British citizenship.

And citizenship requirements could be normalised across each nation so that there was no 'easy back door.

I like the idea in principle though. It could make the UK-AU-CD-NZ quite a trading block.

So you'll means test it to only let in rich Indians, so they can bring their money to invest, or the pheasant Indians, so they can set up a tent city in the hundreds of thousands in your street?

As a lefty its the latter right?

By committing to such an agreement it needs to be with countries who have similar quality of living otherwise you get a flood one way and not the other. As we currently stand its highly unlikely Australians, Brits and Canadians will pack up and move to India.

sounds similar to the UKIP proposal, which was to bar East Europeans from UK but join up with Oz instead - not a bad idea in some respects

Nope not the latter, cashed up migrants equate to demand and more work, either for them in business or servicing them. So on the basis of employment opportunity for the UK workforce.... and more paid up union members In fact the Aussies would appreciate the means test this side... We don't need the UK's unemployable or cheap workers descending here either.

You aren't so left after all . Except when you mentioned unions. You and the rest of Victoria can have that.
