There are a frightening number of people with much the same attitude. I just don't understand it. I sat at work this morning watching my friend take the phone call from the Met Bureau announcing the upgrade to a Cat Five, and In watched her go so pale it scared me. Her entire family are in Cairns, she grew up there, was there through TC Winifred a few years ago, and she knows this is NOT good news.
Parts of the current warning (the one upgrading to a Five) are reminiscent of the warnings put out for Hurricane Katrina, and are very un-Bureau-like, they don't bandy around wording like that in capitals for every cyclone.

My boss went through TC Tracy in '74 and had to be evacuated out in the aftermath (when the population of Darwin went from 48000 down to 10000). He has family up in Cairns and is worried sick currently . . . he knows there's no room for complacency.

Stay safe.

Isnt Rooksie in Cairns? She hasnt posted in yonks but I hope she is OK and everyone else from BE who is there.

Hope our BE people affected manage to check in to let us know they are OK. I cant believe this is happening, there is a woman on the radio now (92.8) she is a single mum saying its impossible to get out and she is bracing for it.

I cant imagine how scared people must be up there.

No, she's now in Mount Isa so out of immediate danger but likely to catch the end of it unless it changes direction and power once it hits land.

What time is it due to hit? I read that some people are refusing to leave their homes, they wont stand a chance surely.

I shall be watching the news tonight, they reckon this will be the worst Australia has ever seen.

10ish tonight - at high tide! They are reckoning on it taking about 12+ hours to pass over. If they don't have anywhere safer than home to move to and haven't moved now, they have to stay put. No one should be out and about up there, must be well weird, just waiting.
