Exclamation Floodwater - Please do not drive in it or play in it

Please treat floodwater with a healthy respect.

DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN PLAY IN FLOOD WATER

DO NOT DRIVE INTO FLOOD WATER

State Disaster Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Ian Stewart
said with several recent tragedies and many flood rescues authorities are again reminding members of the public and motorists not to enter flood waters and obey road closure signs.

“Flood waters are inherently dangerous with unpredictable currents and unforeseen hazards. These are dangerous waters and should be avoided.

Nothing is so urgent that you need to risk your life, the lives of those in your vehicle and the lives of rescuers who will come to your aid. Seek alternate routes or delay your travel rather than cross flooded roads or causeways or attempt to swim or enter flood waters,” he said.

Emergency Management Queensland Assistant Director General Bruce Grady said it did not take a great amount of water to sweep a person off their feet in flooded conditions.

"As little as 15 centimetres of floodwater can knock someone off their feet and sweep them downstream, he said.

"It only takes 60 centimetres to drag a car off a flooded roadway so you could imagine what could happen next if you find yourself in that situation.

"The simple message is just don't enter any floodwaters under any circumstances.

"Twenty people have died in flood related incidents in the last two years and we don't want to see an increase in this figure."

Last week a man was prosecuted for driving without due care and attention after he allegedly ignored a road closed sign and entered flood waters near Mackay.

“This is a dangerous practice and police will issue traffic infringement notices or commence court proceedings for those found disobeying road closure signs,” Deputy Commissioner Stewart said.

Emergency services are on standby throughout the State to assist residents, for storm and flood related assistance contact the State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500 and for assistance in a life threatening emergency call Triple Zero (000).

Reason for the above? Large areas of Queensland are under water. Several towns are currently at risk of major flooding - in some places the water levels in rivers is higher than any on record, in others it is the highest in 100 years. Many places are totally cut off. And yes, its still raining.

Parts of New South Wales have similar issues and major flooding.

Yet reports still come in of people looking at water over the road, and deciding to drive through it. Please don't. Vehicles can be swept away by very small amounts of water, and it can take days to locate them, by which time anyone swept away with their vehicle will be dead. Its happened in Queensland recently, please don't let it happen again. If there is water over the road, either find an alternate route or give up on your journey.

Similarly with children playing in flood waters. Many rivers have spilled over into towns and villages, so what looks like a pool of floodwater can actually be part of a watercourse and have fast flowing currents in it. It may look like fun to play in it but a child can be swept away very very easily.

Please think safety - not just for the sake of you and your family, but also for the sake of the people who have to turn out and carry out the rescues.

A Queensland family is enjoying the company of their two children, and grateful that they are alive, after the pair was swept into flood waters at Proston today.
Reports to police indicate that around 10.10am a 16-year-old girl and her 17-year-old brother attempted to cross the flooded Stuart River Bridge on Boondooma Road when they were swept downstream by the fast flowing waters.
The pair managed to grasp hold of a tree, located about three-quarters of the way across the river, and cling to it whilst awaiting rescue by emergency services personnel.
An SES flood boat carrying police from Proston entered the swollen river to rescue the teens.

“This was so nearly a terrible tragedy for a Queensland family. We are again urging members of the public not to enter or drive into flood waters."

I heard a guy was arrested and charged this morning for going into flood water, and had to be rescued.

Numpty!

To be honest its hard to imagine anyone being daft enough to drive/play/walk through that in storms as bad as these.

Have a look at this bunch of pillocks.

Police have labeled the behaviour of three men in Ipswich as ‘foolish and dangerous’ after they attempted to float from Ipswich to Southbank in hazardous waters today.
Around midday two 17-year-old men and one 18-year-old man entered the swollen and fast flowing Bremer River, at the entrance with the Ironpot Creek on Gregory and Sydney streets, on single bed blow-up air mattresses. Around 12.50pm police were alerted by a concerned member of the public that the men were floating down the river.

Four police crews and an SES floodboat were out looking for this bunch of tw*ats until 2.30pm

The men, from West Ipswich and Redbank Plains, have been issued with a Notice to Appear for public nuisance.
Serves them right. If someone else had drowned while they were using up precious resources.........

Certainly should, although there is a lot of water in the rivers that has to work its way down.
Wivenhoe is opening five gates this morning in a controlled release - this is likely to cut some roads, and there are already several closed because of flooding. Take care if driving near any of the Brisbane rivers and creeks, especially around Mt Crosby and other roads at risk from a Wivenhoe release.

Several towns are in real trouble
- Theodore, Dalby and Chinchilla are probably the worst, but there are also evacuations in Alpha, Jericho, Mundubbera, and Gayndah; Emerald could be in trouble later today as well.
Theodore may be subject to mandatory evacuation instead of voluntary today due to rising water, and no way in or out of the town except by an airstrip - which itself is at risk of isolated from the township itself. No-one can map what could happen with the rising water in Theodore cos it hasn't been experienced before

I saw this on the news yesterday! Madness but knowing a few teenagers, it doesn't surprise me! One of the reports guessed at the river flowing at approx 30 kms per hour, I'd say the boys would've been wishing they hadn't started their "joy" ride when it got that fast!

Such a waste of resources!

I don't wish to lighten the seriousness of the situation but what about the turds?

Do they like sharing their passage with what has come from many dark passages?

I guess these guys are drawn to their likes though.

Humour is the only way to get through disasters like this

Residents are being evacuated from several regional towns including Dalby and Theodore. Police have mandatory evacuation powers over six Queensland communities. Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts this morning declared them disaster zones.
Flood-prone residents of Chinchilla, Dalby, Warra, Theodore, Alpha and Jericho now have to move on as and when directed.
Theodore, west of Bundaberg, is already being evacuated. Up to five choppers are flying its 300 residents to Moura.
The Federal Government has been asked to send in Black Hawk helicopters to help rescue people from Theodore.
The 300-strong community are at-risk after the raging Dawson River rose to a record high this morning.
