Watch and Act

Issued For: Wandin North, Seville, Wandin East, Silvan
Fire Origin: WANDIN NORTH
Incident Name: VICTORIA RD
Issued: 20/12/15 1:57 AM

This is a UPDATED Watch and Act message issue by Country Fire Authority for Wandin North, Seville, Wandin East, Silvan.

Firefighters are continuing to work on the grassfire in the WANDIN NORTH area at Rodger Road, and we would like to remind the community that it is still not yet under control.

Fire fighting vehicles will be operating in the area overnight and tomorrow to ensure it stays within the contained area. Residents are asked to avoid travelling on the roads, in and around the area, due to falling trees and ease of access for equipment and trucks. Smoke will be noticeable.

As the fire is still not yet under control, CFA are urging residents in the local area to be alert and stay informed of the fire. Damaging winds are forecast for early Sunday morning, with peak gusts up to 75 km/h, which could cause the fire to spread.

There is a squally south west wind change forecast for early Sunday afternoon which may significantly affect fire behaviour.

While the immediate threat has passed, continue to stay informed and monitor conditions.

Default re: Bushfires - Victoria

Fire officials have confirmed a number of buildings have been lost in a bushfire south of Ballarat.

A watch and act alert is in place for Scotsburn, Elaine, Clarendon, Mount Doran, Bungal, Ballark, Lal Lal and Morrisons, but the Country Fire Authority (CFA) said fire crews had managed to slow the spread of the blaze.

The CFA are working throughout the night to try and strengthen containment lines in the south of the state, as it prepares for strong winds to feed fires burning in several locations.

Teams in Wandin are focussing their efforts on the north east of the fire as they prepare for strong winds.

An emergency warning was issued after erratic winds fanned the bushfire on Saturday afternoon.

CFA spokesman Graeme Baxter told 774 ABC Melbourne "we have lost some houses but I don't have a number on that".

He said it could include farm buildings and homes.

Homes destroyed in Australia bushfires - BBC News

Twelve Australian families have lost their homes to bushfires near Melbourne, days ahead of Christmas.
Fire authorities are also warning of dangerous hot and windy conditions on Christmas and Boxing Day.
Crews were still tackling a blaze at Scotsburn, west of the city, for a third day on Monday.
The Country Fire Authority's (CFA) Craig Lapsley said one firefighter had been injured, but it was extremely fortunate no lives had been lost.
Some firefighters were struggling to stand due to the high temperatures and strong winds.
