I was in Tassie mid October and I could not believe how brown and dry the countryside was.

I was there last week, and most of the island is horrifyingly dry, Very scary really. Comparisons were even being made with 1967 as far as fire danger goes, which was when many people died in fires on the island and thousands of homes were destroyed.

Firefighters and analysts from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland are now involved in the response.

Tasmanian bushfires: Mawbanna, Nunamara under threat, residents urged to consider leaving - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

Fire is threatening the Tasmanian communities of Mawbanna, in the north-west, and Nunamara, near Launceston, with residents told they should consider leaving.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) said the fires would be difficult to control and there may be embers, smoke and ash falling on the communities.

TFS state operations chief officer John Holloway told the ABC's Country Hour that weather conditions were improving, but the situation was still dangerous.

"We've got more mild conditions weatherwise but because of the dryness of a lot of fuels out in the bush at the moment, fires are behaving quite badly," he said.

"They're moving quickly still even without a lot of wind behind them."

More than 42,000 hectares have been burnt in the past 10 days, double the area of the 2013 Dunalley bushfires.

Key Points:

Fire warning for Mawbanna upgraded to watch and act
More than 42,000 hectares burnt in past 10 day
Up to 100 remote firefighters coming from interstate over the weekend
Firefighters pleased with community response
Watch and act alerts are current for the fires at Pipeline Road, Mawbanna and Nunamara, between Bourkes Road And Binghams Road.

Tasmania bushfires: Mawbanna fire upgraded to watch and act, amid four-day fire ban

A bushfire warning for an uncontrolled fire near Mawbanna in Tasmania's north-west has been upgraded to watch and act.

The Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) said firefighters were unable to determine the front of the fire due to inaccessible terrain and an enormous amount of thick smoke.

TFS advised the fire may put the Mawbanna area, including Mawbanna Road and roads leading off Mawbanna Road south of Dip Road, at high risk.

There may be embers, smoke and ash falling on Mawbanna area and that fire may threaten homes earlier than the main fire.

HOMES are at risk from bushfires at Nelson Bay, Temma and Arthur River in Tasmania’s northwest, with authorities telling families to evacuate to the beach or implement their bushfire survival plan.

There were unconfirmed reports that some properties had been damaged by the fires.

A Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) spokesman said people began gathering at the beach about 5am after an earlier doorknock of the area warning them of the threat.

Fire crews from New Zealand, specialised in remote area work, had joined the bushfire battle after mainland help arrived last week, he said.

The TFS issued two “Emergency Warnings” for the area this morning, saying it was at a high risk from the fire.

The fires put Nelson Bay, Temma and Arthur River at high risk “now”, the alerts issued at 6.52am and 7.04am said.

Our next door neighbour , who is a forestry manager, has today flown out with other volunteers to help firefight. Looking to be gone three weeks for starters.

Good for him. They've flown in quite a lot from NZ now, along with rotations from other Aussie states - I think Queensland is up to its fifth team now, plus we've sent Fire Behaviour Analysts. Lots of hardware going down as well, and mobile habitats to accommodate everyone as some areas are so remote.

BUSHFIRES sweeping through Tasmania’s wilderness have reduced some of the state’s most unique historical architecture to ash.

At least two old trappers’ huts have perished in fires in the Great Western Tiers, while other mountain huts have been narrowly saved by firefighters intent on protecting the rustic relics of a bygone era.

A century ago about 100 trappers’ huts were dotted throughout the high country landscape, but now there are only a handful of the original structures left.

The Mountain Huts Preservation Society has praised the efforts of firefighting crews for protecting huts by water bombing and back-burning around them.

“We notified the authorities about where all the huts are and they’ve done a wonderful job,” said society member Margaret Howe.

“It’s sad we’ve lost two, but it could have been much worse.”
