Bushfire EMERGENCY WARNING for parts of Wellard in the City of Kwinana and Baldivis in the City of Rockingham

A bushfire EMERGENCY WARNING remains for people in parts of Wellard and Baldivis, bounded by Bertram Road, Kwinana Freeway, Mundijong Road, and Baldivis and Wellard Roads to the west, in the City of Kwinana and Rockingham.

You are in danger and need to act immediately to survive. There is a threat to lives and homes.
There are two fires in the area.
One fire started on the eastern side of Baldivis Road and south of Millar Road, it is burning on the northern side of Millar Road towards Johnson Road.
A second fire is burning between between Kerosene Lane and Millar Road, on the western side of Baldivis Road, it is burning towards Millar Road.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:

The bushfires are moving fast in a north easterly direction.
They are out of control and unpredictable.
Burning embers are likely to be blown around your home. Spot fires are starting up to 100 metres ahead of the fire. Flames are up to 10 metres high.


WHAT TO DO:

If the way is clear, leave now for a safer place.
Do not wait and see, leaving at the last minute is deadly.
There is ember attack ahead of the fire, so close all doors and windows, and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
If your plan is to stay and actively defend, do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. If you have access to a water tank and plan to defend your home, start patrolling with your hose and put out spot fires.
If you cannot leave, you need to get ready to shelter in your home and actively defend it.
If you are not at home, it is too dangerous now to return.


SAFER PLACE:

Your safest option may be to visit family or friends who live away from the area.


SAFEST ROUTE:

If you live in Wellard you should leave in a northern direction away from the fire.


ALERT LEVEL:
A bushfire WATCH AND ACT has been issued for people in the western part of Wellard, Leda, Parmelia and Bertram in the City of Kwinana.

There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing.

You need to leave or get ready to actively defend.

WHAT TO DO:

If you are not prepared or you plan to leave, leave now if the way is clear.
There is ember attack ahead of the fire, so close all doors and windows, and turn off evaporative air conditioners, but keep water running through the system if possible.
If you are well prepared and plan to actively defend your home, make final preparations now
Do not rely on mains water pressure as it may be affected. If you have access to a water tank and plan to defend your home, start patrolling with your hose and put out spot fires.
If you are not at home, do not try to return as conditions in the area could be very dangerous.

ROAD CLOSURES:
Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site.

A number of roads have been closed including:

The Kwinana Freeway Northbound between Safety Bay Road and Mortimer Road.
Millar Road
Johnson Road
Wellard Road


WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:

Forty career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters are on the scene.
Firefighters are protecting properties in a subdivision north of Millar Road.
Aerial support is assisting ground crews.


EXTRA INFORMATION:

The fire was reported at 4.02pm today and currently there has been approximately 100 hectares burnt.
The cause of the fire is unknown.
People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
DFES is managing the fire.

ALERT LEVEL:
A bushfire WATCH AND ACT has been issued for people in the eastern part of Leda and western part of Wellard, in an area bounded by Gilmore Avenue, Wellard Road, Millar Road and Mandurah Road in the City of Kwinana.

The alert level for this fire has been downgraded as one of the two fires is now contained and under control. There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is approaching the area and conditions are changing.
You need to leave or get ready to actively defend.
One fire started on the eastern side of Baldivis Road and south of Millar Road.
A second fire is burning between between Kerosene Lane and Millar Road, on the western side of Baldivis Road, it is burning towards Millar Road.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:
One fire is now contained and under control, the second fire is moving slowly in a north westerly direction.
If you live in southern Leda burning embers are likely to be blown around your home.

WHAT TO DO:

A number of roads have been closed including:

Two hundred career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service, Bush Fire Service and Department of Parks and Wildlife firefighters are on the scene.
Firefighters are strengthening containment lines.
Aerial support cannot operate in the dark and have been released from the incident. If needed they will return at first light.

The fire was reported at 4.02pm on Tuesday 27 January
The cause of the fire is unknown.
People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

• Baldivis Road between Millar Road and Kerosene Lane
• Kerosene Lane between Baldivis Road and Mandurah Road

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:
• One hundred career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters are on the scene.
• Firefighters are strengthening containment lines with earth moving machinery.
• Arborists are felling burnt trees to make the area safe.
• The Department of Parks and Wildlife are supporting the Incident Management Team.
• Aerial intel will conduct a reconnaissance flight to map hotspots this morning.

EXTRA INFORMATION:
• The fire was reported at 4.02pm on Tuesday 27 January
• The cause of the fire is suspicious.
• People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
• One fire has currently burnt 140 hectares between Baldivis Road and the Kwinana Freeway.
• The second fire has burnt 72 hectares near Kerosene Lane in Baldivis.
• DFES is managing the fire.

A bushfire ADVICE remains for people in the Leda, Wellard and Baldivis in the City of Kwinana and the City of Rockingham.
• There is no threat to lives or homes but there is a lot of smoke in the area.
• Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:
• The two separate fires in the area are now contained and under control.

WHAT TO DO:
• Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
• Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
• Read through your bushfire survival plan.
• If you do not have a plan decide what you will do if the situation gets worse.

IF DRIVING:
• Be extremely careful when driving through the area.
• Turn your headlights on and drive slowly.
• Watch for emergency services personnel and follow their directions.
• If you cannot see clearly, pull over, keep your headlights and hazard lights on, and wait until the smoke clears.
• If you have a respiratory condition and you have been affected by smoke you should contact your local doctor or call Health Direct on 1800 022 222.

ALERT LEVEL:
An ALL CLEAR advice has been issued for people in Calista, Parmelia, Bertram, and Cooloongup.
• The danger has passed for people in these areas but you need to remain vigilant in case the situation changes.

ROAD CLOSURES:
Avoid the area and be aware of fire and other emergency services personnel working on site.
Millar Road/Telephone Lane will remain closed between Wellard Road and St Albans Road.
All other roads are open.

WHAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE DOING:
• Twelve volunteer Bush Fire Service firefighters are on the scene.
• Firefighters are strengthening containment lines and mopping up. Firefighters will remain on the scene overnight.

EXTRA INFORMATION:
• The incident was reported at 4.02pm on Tuesday 27 January, and approximately 170 hectares have been burnt.
• The cause of the fires is suspicious.
• People are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to Police Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
• The City of Rockingham is managing the fire.

A bushfire ADVICE remains for people in the Leda, Wellard and Baldivis in the City of Kwinana and the City of Rockingham.

• There is no threat to lives or homes but there is some smoke in the area.
• Although there is no immediate danger you need to be aware and keep up to date in case the situation changes.

BUSHFIRE BEHAVIOUR:
• The two separate fires are contained and under control.
• Firefighters are currently experiencing easterly winds which is creating smoke in the area.

WHAT TO DO:
• Stay alert and monitor your surroundings.
• Watch for signs of a bushfire, especially smoke and flames.
• Read through your bushfire survival plan.
• If you do not have a plan decide what you will do if the situation gets worse.

IF DRIVING:
• Be extremely careful when driving through the area.
• Drive slowly and watch for hazards on the road including firefighting appliances and heavy machinery.
