BIG 6.4 EARTHQUAKE SOUTH OF AUSTRALIA

6.4 earthquake to start of the year in the southern ocean south of Australia

The earthquake was centered about 1,032 kilometers (641 miles) southwest of Hobart on Tasmania or about 1,471 kilometers (914 miles) southwest of Melbourne. It struck about 8 kilometers deep, making it a shallow earthquake, according to Geoscience Australia.

No tsunami warnings are expected to be issued.
