When your visa is granted, you usually have 12 months from the date of the earliest medical or police check to validate your visa.

Depending on the visa you then usually have 5 years in which to move on a permanent basis.....after validation and from the date of your medicals or police checks.

The visa is valid for 5 years but you must go to or visit OZ within 12 months of the date of your medical/PC checks (which ever is the earlier)to validate it.

Depends on the type of visa. Some visas are valid for 1 year (working holiday) some are longer (skilled) some are permanent and others are temporary.
If you are asking about the initial entry date, DIC will give you a date to enter the county by. You do not actually have to settle at that time, but you do need to go to Australia to have the visa stamped and make an initial entry. If you have not already done so, check out www.immi.gov.au
