Travel to Vietnam with small children
We wish to visit Vietnam (Hanoi and Halong Bay mainly at this stage) in August/September.
Can anyone advise on how feasible this is with small children and suggest travel agents/hotels. Any idea if one can rent a house in Hanoi for a week?
Thank you
Yva

Vietnamese LOVE children and you will probably find yourself the subject of a lot of
doting and fawning. You may find yourself safer and less subject to "foreigners'
rates" as a consequence!
Having said that....western accoutrements might be tough to come by, such as
disposable nappies (don't think I ever saw any), pasteurized milk, and so on. If your
children have environmental or health sensitivities, check with your doctor and with
a travel clinic.

Travelling with young children in Thailand, Laos,Vietnam,Cambodia etc. will enable
you to have a considerably more rewarding holiday than without them. You will be seen
differently than simply a ' white buffalo with a wallet'. Local people will initiate
interaction with you.....just roll with it and have fun.........however be on guard
for cultural oddities..such as a complete unknown woman may ask you if she could
'BITE' your baby. You obviously say NO........but realize that she LOVES the sight of
your child so much she ........'could just eat it'. Upsetting and out of cultural
context....but it is a sweet compliment. Most Southeast Asians are suckers for young
kids.......they may get sick and puke on the restaurant floor during peak dining
hours........no problem.......who hasn't had a sick kid ? People simply UNDERSTAND.
If you are in Thailand prior to Vietnam......go to the large department stores and
purchase a supply of LARGE diapers (if your children are in this age group). There is
a brand from Japan that fits Eurasian children...........for full Caucasian children
you may need to bring some duct tape and splice two together. You will have one great
time..........enjoy.
