Default General immigration question...

Hi all.

Little background: I am a 21yo student about to graduate (BA History) and have decided I want to do a lot of travelling and live abroad, fed up of the UK and have been looking at SE Asia, but anywhere hot/exotic will do really.

Basically, my question is, is it possible as a British citizen with no in-demand qualifications of work experience like myself to just turn up in a country in SE Asia (or any of the world for that matter) and just start living there? I realise this is probably quite a naive and overly-idealistic view of moving abroad, but in doing my online research I have no idea where to start - a lot of the information is quite confusing to a 21 year old who's only ever lived in the UK.

Ideally, I want to live abroad, somewhere nice like Aus, Canada, or SE Asia, and work bar jobs/earn basic income and live in a no-frills, cheap apartments, travel about a bit and enjoy my time there for as long as possible. Is this possible or do I need a job offer prior to arrival etc. ??

Cheers!

You mention Aus - you'll need a visa just to be let in!

AFAIK if it's a tourist visa you can stay for up to 12 months but can't work. If it's a working holiday visa you can work but not for the same place the whole time (but that would work for travelling around). If it's a student visa you can work (think 20 hours pw) but obviously also have to be a student.

Check out www.immi.gov.au for current info as it's been a while since I was up to date.

Good luck

Unless you're thinking of starting your own business, personally I wouldn't just turn up anywhere.

I'd suggest you look at each individual country forum in SE Asia section on here, and have a good look through and find some threads about those who have been looking for jobs. May give you some pointers. I know for sure there are relevant threads in the Malaysia section and the Thailand section. Then tag on to those threads maybe.

Good post from Abi about Australia. Maybe that's the way to go.

Which south-east Asian countries have you visited?
