POXIT

Polish Exit from the EU

It seems that Jaroslaw Kaszynski and his gang are planning to leave. "It does not matter if Poland is poor, as long as it is Catholic!"

I saw the thread title, and who had started it, and I thought this was a new thread about medieval Scottish swear words. :(

Do you have a source for that?

Me ? Read the "Daily Express" ? I rely on more series papers and periodicals ! For a good picture of what is happening I commend to you all "Der Spiegel" published every Monday.

For those of a more frivolous turn, try "The Beano" of "The Dandy".

It seems strange that "The Law and Justice Party" wants to clobber the judiciary.

It doesn't want to 'clobber the judiciary'. They want to reverse the bad 'reforms' made by another party.

They are in the process of ensuring that the judges and the procurators are their men (and women). They are turning Poland which was a secular republic into a clerical state ruled by the laws of the more backward elements in the Catholic Church.

And some seem to see no issue with that.

But if backwards elements of another religion were to try to impose their brand of religion n anyone else, there'd be outrage, and rightly so. But because it's a 'Christian' religion (what was it before it became Christ's?), it's given an almost free pass in the media.

Religious extremism is still extremism, whatever the religion.

Exactly right. Poland is turning into another version of the Communist authoritarian regime it was so proud to overthrow in the 80's.

Among many "reforms", the right wing Kaczynski government wants to neuter the constitutional court by requiring a 2/3 vote instead of simple majority for any decisions. In addition, it's eliminating, reducing, and filtering press representation at government bodies like the Sejm (parliament) a la Trump.

It's a shame what Poles and Poland are doing to themselves, and mostly in the name of traditional, rural, 19th century Catholicism. It's an embarrassment to the forward-looking EU. The EU is starting to lose patience as seen in recent EU commission and court decisions.
