Default Medical insurance

Hi - I'm new to the forums but I'm looking for ex pats in Bulgaria - Varna area. My mum moved out here and initially had travel insurance. She's been here two years. On Monday 14th she had a brain haemorrhage - she is currently in Varna in a hospital - unconscious and unwell - very unwell. My basis for this post is please please please make sure you all and your families who have done it or are planning the move - make damn sure you have medical insurance because she didn't, and only had the E111 card. We as her family now have to find between £18 and £26k to repatriate her back to the uk. It's a nightmare nobody should have to endure! If anyone can help us or even just visit her - offer advice ... Anything please let me know. Thanks

Sorry to hear of your mum's condition and your predicament.

Unfortunately people often "move" somewhere and rely on "travel" insurance. Travel insurance is only appropriate of you are traveling. Once you have moved somewhere travel insurance is likely useless.

You might be able to get some assistance by setting up a "gofundme" appeal.

Hiya, thank you so much for your reply - it is an absolute nightmare. And yes I agree - medical insurance is a necessary just for this - not travel insurance. We have set up a go fund me account but it's starting slowly. I just wanted to show people how bad it is if they don't have this insurance and get taken as ill as this. Thank you
