First point of call is see how many points you have, and which visa you can apply for. See here: www.immi.gov.au (and follow migrant links)

Then you need a skills assessment. Details here: www.vetassess.com.au

Then you need to apply for a visa, on the immi site above.

Once you have a visa and actually move here, you need to apply for a licence. Can't give you many details on that just now as I'm not 100% sure what Vetassess issue you with - just waiting for the first lot of applicants to go through the whole process.

Hi to all Sparkies in OZ (and those soon to be!)

Looking through the many threads on Electricians working in OZ; i'm more confused than ever. It looks like there's not one rule for all Electricians in all of Australia.

My situation is this:
I am a JIB Approved Electrician working in the game for about 19 years.
I have C&G part 1, part 2, 2391 T&I. plus by working on the London Underground i have several other Qualifications.

We have applied for the subclass 175 Visa and i have applied and successfully received the TRA General Electrician 4311-11 Certificate.

The Visa application has all been sent off, the Medicals and Police checks have been sent so we're just waiting for the "yes" or "no".

We are looking to move to the Perth area and would appreciate any more advise as to what other licences etc i may need to apply for and whether i can (or must) apply for them before we arrive.
I've read on one thread that an Electrician applied and got his TRA but then when he arrived in OZ was then told that was for the VISA only and that he needed to apply for it all over again Is this the case for everyone?
I've also heard that I must apply to ARTC. can this be applied for before i get to OZ? What's involved?
I was also given the details of "Western Australia -Department of Consumer & Employment Protection - Energy Safety; regarding an Electrical Licence??? Can anybody tell me anymore??

On another note: What's life like as a Sparky in Perth?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Mark

Yes you will need a ARTC certificate and no it's not the same as the pre-migration TRA assessment (even though the form looks the same ) confusing isn't it?

You can apply for an ARTC cert from the UK, but you will need an Australian address to send the results to as they won't post the results abroad, it doesn't have to be in the state you are moving to.

The form is here: http://www.workplace.gov.au/NR/rdonl...ck9Oct2007.pdf

You will need to attend a wiring rules course once you are here, and once you pass that you can then apply for a licence. WA licening info here: http://www.energysafety.wa.gov.au/en...uirements.html

Not sure about WA, it's usually about 16 weeks or so. SA do it in 3 weeks.

This might help: http://britishexpats.com/forum/showthread.php?t=375680

Mark,
You need to get your ARTC certificate, as others have mentioned. Then apply to Department of Licencing at Severn Oaks Street Perth, for permission to sit the electrical exam. However when you apply for permission it is best to attend in person with your City and Guilds papers any others qualifications and refeerences this way if there is any questions they have you can answer them then and there.
You will then be given a letter stating you can sit the practical electrical exam, 8 practical tests of which you need to do 6. If you pass this you are then allowed to sit the regulations course 2 hours theroy test on regulations multi choice.

Regards

Brian

That's not so bad then is it? Glad they also make it easier, lets hope some of the other states start doing the same (although I won't hold my breath )

Just as quick question to a sparkie in australia.

My husband has been told some cruesome stories about creepy crawlies and possoms so now he says he does not fancy being a sparkie in australia as he does not want to get up in lofts and go under floorboards.

How bad is it?
