Default Private health insurance

To become resident in Cyprus now - there is requirement of private health insurance I understand. As a retired person 65+ are there a few local insurers who would take this on? Does any one know who they are? What sort of rates have to be paid and are they any good? ( I know about the 101 form, pink slip etc but still think private insurance is required). Or is it the likes of AXA and Bupa that give the cover? Many thanks for replies

If you are 65+, then you will be entitled to a E121. This will be enough. It will allow you to use the state hospitals and doctors, but be warned. Its not exactly UK standard.

Don't let immigration talk you in to having private health insurance, if you are in receipt of a UK state pension and have your E121 then as Honest_H says you are entitled to state health care. as all the bills for your care go back to UK anyway. I have heard that some immigration officials do not like this and try to insist on Private insurance, but persevere.

Mycroft is absolutely right. If you are an EU citizen and in receipt of a government retirement pension you DO NOT need private health insurance.
You are entitled to treatment at the government hospitals.
Be aware however that a simple trip to the hospital outpatients clinics can be a whole days experience as the queues are quite long and the doctors, once you get to see one will send you for a barrage of tests (which is actually a good thing).

Does that cover your spouse as well if they are below retirement age, like in other EU countries

Yes, your spouse is entitled as your dependant. Makes no difference whether its a wife or husband.
